I cant see why the government shouldnt buy a fleet of fuel efficient and reliable cars - my vote is Camry Hybrids.
If they are good enough for taxi drivers then they are good enough for our politicians.
They can buy the PM a Lexus Hybrid if he wants something extra flash.

On radio yesterday Dave Moore the Motoring Editor for Fairfax was quotying figures for the diesel BMW that were better than a Toyota Camry Hybrid. He said the only argument against the current fleet that held water was a sort of reverse snobbery.

KiwiNZ:

You need to think not family car and family car driving, think defensive and offensive driving etc. Things like run flats are just one example.

Run flats are just a type of tyre. Very easy to spec or retrofit to just about any car. I'm strugging to think of other 'features' of a 7-series Beamer that would make a large difference to the type of driving you refer to.

A hybrid Lexus would out-do a 7-series BMW in many ways, at a lower cost.

Off topic by a mile - but I googled "Dave Moore fairfax government" and up comes this geekzone thread and your post.
Now you posted this about 5 minutes ago - how the heck does google trawl so fast?

Google has a feed from Echelon :-)

The Dave Moore comments may be available as a National Radio .mp3 recording from Jim Mora's show.

KiwiNZ: The total package and net bottom line was very very favourable.

Two years ago we bought into a fleet procurement company, so I'm now getting up to speed with how the auto industry works.

There are plenty of things that drive the purchase price - who you are, how many vehicles you are purchasing, what you do.  Distributors can also throw in service contracts as sweeteners, as well as paying ORC, initial registration, pre-delivery inspection and a full tank of fuel.

Having seen some of the AOG pricing, the pricing is very sharp.  I'd be highly surprised if the BMWs were purchased at even close to the $90k as reported.  I can also understand why there's no way in hell BMW would want the general public knowing what they were sold for.

The Camry also wouldn't be considered exclusive enough, as it is a common family car. They would move up to the next level with the Lexus. But if they move to that sort of vehicle, they should also keep them longer, as Lexus/Toyota should be a lot more reliable and cheaper to service than these luxury European brands according to the Dog and Lemon guide. So they should easily be serviceable for 10 years.

Serviceable doesn't mean presentable. These cars often get "worked" in and hold overseas dignataries etc. People need some perspective in general about this stuff, it's not huge money compared to a lot of things the Govt spends money on.

The overall costs of running a fleet are depreciation (purchase is not strictly a cost), tax, fuel, servicing, repairs and cost of finance if any.

For 34 cars you can get an operating package including reduced purchase price (ie reduced deprecation), discounted parts, and discounted servicing.

You certainly can't deny the BMW is a quality product especially compared to the soon to be extinct dinosaurs from over the Tasman.

If you are in the market for such a vehicle, you could do worse than one second hand.  They will go cheap - especially after the first few, they will have been well maintained and aftermarket BMW parts are readily available.  You will pay through the nose if you take it to a BMW service centre - but it's out of warranty so why would you?  Any reputable mechanic should be able to service or repair, including reading fault codes.

Edit: typo
