freitasm: WP is very well capable. Just devs don't want to put effort into small user base.

Aside from the fact that I've been working on the Semble project, if I was starting up, I'd prefer to launch with some kind of MVP (minimum viable product) and get something out on the market than stuff around for any longer than I need to. Better to have some people on Android and look at WP later down the track than nothing at all :)

iOS will probably never be supported as it would mean Apple would have to open up the NFC API to developers. I can't see them doing that any time soon, not least of all because it would compete with ApplePay.

Windows phone.....don't think anything has been said one way or another, but suspect it will go the way that many other app developers do and ignore it due to low adoption. Also not sure if WP is even technically capable of this.

I had thought it would have made sense to target that market first - if only on the assumption that iPhone owners, on average, would be higher income earners and therefore more likely make purchases this way. But if it is not Apple interests to expose its APIs, I guess we will need to wait for Apple Pay.

Even then, I have a feeling the banks partnered with Semble won't want to work with Apple Pay. It essentially would rule out the future of bringing that app to iOS if they did because who would jump from the built in iOS app to a third party one (when/if Apple eventually opens up NFC) that does the same thing?

So, is Semble worth getting sorted? I rang 2degrees and they suggested it would cost me $10 for a new SIM. Not too bad, but is it worth it?

Tried my M9 as indicated and even thought the Semble symbol shows up on the Tap and Pay settings the McDonald's terminals screamed "Transaction not allowed" when I tried to pay for a coke.

Waiting for the software to be updated...

Somewhat disappointed with the narrow range of supported devices and OS versions to be honest, definitely hope they can cover more ground over the next few weeks/months.

(Unreasonably hoping for HCE since I'm on a nexus 5)

I am working on the assumption that the Nexus devices will be supported at some point, as I picked up my Nexus 5 from 2 degrees 1.5 years ago. If not, im not too concerned as the S6 has got enough of my attention to warrant an upgrade.

The other problem I have is that I currently bank with Kiwibank. Over the last couple of months, while waiting for this solution, I have seriously considered moving banks (technology is a big motivator for me).

I look forward to the solution being tested further and the kinks ironed out.

Of course Mastercard can't ride the waves and sent out a press release:

MasterCard Mobile Transaction Solutions (MTS) has today announced that it is providing the mobile wallet solution for Semble to enable secure contactless payments with a smartphone in New Zealand.

Semble – a joint venture between Paymark, the company that processes the majority of EFTPOS transactions in New Zealand, and the country’s mobile network operators: Vodafone, 2degrees and Spark – is simply put, a mobile app which stores credit and debit card information on your smartphone.

Once activated, consumers are able to purchase goods using their Android smartphones and in the very near future, the ability to add additional bank cards, applications and services such as public transport, loyalty, coupons and vouchers, will be available.

“New Zealanders are increasingly relying on smartphones to manage their lives, so it makes sense to move the physical contents of our wallets to our smartphones,” said Rob Ellis, CEO, Semble.

“We have worked closely with the MTS team and in their former capacity as C-SAM over the past two years as we developed Semble and look forward to continuing to work with them to offer additional applications and services to our customers in the future.”

Available on a range of Android NFC-enabled (near field communication) smartphones, personal user information is stored securely within individual SIM cards. To set up, users simply need to request a Semble ready SIM from their mobile provider, download the Semble app from Google Play, add their cards and make their first payment.

Transactions work in exactly the same way as with physical bank cards, and all purchases appear on your bank statement as they do now.

Felix Marx, group executive, MasterCard Mobile Transaction Solutions said: “Semble is a fantastic, highly innovative product and a testament to the collaboration of the key players involved in its development. We are therefore very proud that MasterCard mobile wallet technology is powering the platform and creating a simple, secure and centralised way to make mobile payments. And, we look forward to bringing additional applications to the people of New Zealand in the future.”

The mobile wallet is based on MasterCard’s Mobile Transaction Platform (MTP), providing a single entry point for the delivery of the banks services through a common wallet application. C-SAM was acquired by MasterCard at the beginning of 2014, and is now called MasterCard Mobile Transaction Solutions (MTS).

So incredibly jealous, Mauricio. I'm still on the M7 - didn't see much incentive to upgrade to the 8, but am in the queue for the 9.

Back on topic, the M9 isn't on Spark's list of supported phones tho!

They will probably be lining up support for it to coincide when the HTC gets released here.

No. The M7 and M8 both work, but the M9 is not working yet. Last night I used my M8 to test the SIM and add my card - which all worked fine.

It sounds as though is just bad timing. Talked to someone at HTC today who told me it's a software compatibility issue that is being addressed. Since the handset is not launched yet there's no much priority. It just happens the fix is not expect until after the handset is launched.

Shame really.

Is this going to be firmware dependant or hardware dependent? Will this work ok on a supported phone ie Samsung Galaxy Note 3 that was parallel imported and hence running foreign firmware?
