last night... "The Dark Knight"... Very good, but not uh-maaazing. Ledger was brilliant.
the night before... "Taken"... weak as. Paint-by-numbers American gotta-rescure-my-daughter tripe. Some good lines by Neeson but I can't believe he signed up for this dreck.

Interesting that you say Taken was "weak as"
Everyone who I have spoken to who has seen Taken said it was great and I enjoyed it too.

It's the kind of stuff I would have liked when I was 10 years old, IE: Commando with Arnie SwarzeneggerDad with military past. Kid gets kidnapped. Dad kills a bunch of foreigners. Dad rescues daughter. When I see a movie, I don't want to feel deja-vu within the first 30 min's.
Stock & standard formula action movie in a box. Just add a big name. My girlfriend and I looked at each other sideways at a few parts and nearly turned it off (like we did with "Wanted" when the lame "I must avenge my fathers death" montage came on)
Anyways, "everybody", when talking about popularity, no offense intended, usually means the less discerning and more easily pleased people. That's why substance-less rubbish ends up at the top of the heap (same goes for music, art, books, magazines, news etc).
Having said that there's a place for mindless escapism... but if I want totally over the top, predictable, and "easy to get" American stuff with happing endings - I watch ridiculous comedies. At least theres no pretense of seriousness.

Well, i'm one of those "less discerning" movie goers :) Myself, friends, family and workmates enjoyed Taken. Nothing wrong with mindless escapism after a busy day at work :) I also like movies of substance! You've noted that you weren't impressed with either Wanted or Taken. I'm curious that a discerning person like yourself didn't read reviews, the synopsis and watch trailers prior to watching these movies and come to the probable conclusion that you wouldn't like the movie?

In saying that, i do agree with your assessment of The Dark Knight. You can tell Ledger put his whole being into the role! What let it down from my point of view was stretching the storyline into an unnecessarily long movie and maybe 1 too many plot twists.

Taken and Wanted both came highly recommended by several friends, unfortunately. Heh... win some, lose some.
Usually I look up a couple of trailers and hit IMDB etc to check it out first - I hate wasting an hour and a half.
I guess with all the movies I've seen over the years, and music I've gotten into (a ridiculous amount, across all genres) - you develop a certain taste. The further you dig, the more awesome stuff you find hidden away and the less interested I become in the the mainstream stuff... Not to say the mainstream totally sucks, that would be just narrow minded, some of my favourite bands and movies are blockbusters and chart-toppers....

Anyways, last viewed: Get Smart : Rating B-

Pleasantly surprised. I've always liked Steve Carell, and Hathaway is sooooooo hot. Some nice nods to the original series in there. I'm glad they didn't try to copy it, rather, made it into something more contemporary.

I watched Kung Fu Panda over the weekend with my daughters (9 and 11) and we all had a good laugh. This was my first viewing of a Blu Ray movie (full HD) - very, very impressed.

Still awesome after all these years. Brilliant cast. Great dialogue. Intense. Brutal. Funny. Christopher Walken. 'nuff said!

Done back when Tarantino was fresh and relevant, LOL.

Tropic Thunder. Favourite Tom Cruise role ever (excepting perhaps Magnolia). I like him best when he's playing his own character for laffs.

One thing that did irk me about The Joker... there wasn't much depth to him other than "woooo crazy guy destroying stuff". But Ledger's delivery was (mostly) perfect.

Last night I watched Jimmy Carr (the presenter off "Distraction") live in 2007... wow... dude is HARSH. You don't want to be in the front row when he's picking on people! Hahaha.

The Spirit: If you go into this without many expectations, and try not to take it seriously, it can be - in parts - quite entertaining. But the whole thing isn't for me. I guess if i'd had some experience with the comic I'd have appreciated it more. I think it really is geared towards those people who know the story, and characters, and are expecting to see exactly what the movie presents to them. Great effects of course, some very good comic to movie interpretations, but all in all quite a bad film IMO.

The Wrestler: This was an instant classic. Loved every minute. Mickey Rourke is epic! He's quickly becoming one of my favourite character actors, from Marv in Sin City to this - just a wonderful film and well worth the accolades it's getting.

Goodfellas: Saw this in JB HiFi on Blu-ray for $25 so had to grab it! Watched it with my partner who had never seen it and she also loved it. It hasn't lost any of its shine since the first time I saw it, and on Blu-ray it looks so good!

Seven pounds - went to it not knowing anything about it really, but enjoyed it. Just a warning, do NOT read information about this movie from the Village site as they give you the whole story in 5 secs !!!
Make sure you're there for the start or if you miss the first few mins you'll be sitting there going "what the fudge is this movie about and wheres it going ?" :-p
