There are at least four men's barber shops in Cuba Street now, and more than that many in Willis Street/Lambton Quay.

a few years ago there were at best only 1-2 in the whole of the CBD.

But what is their bottom line and ROI like?

Well, as the number of barber shops in the Wellington CBD have more than quadrupled in the last 2-3 years, I'd say it's a fairly profitable business investment.

As someone who has a couple of barbers in his family and know a couple by association, none are living on the breadline, that's for sure.

To conclude, It appears the thread has run its course, We have established that Barbers don't have to cut womens hair and they lose money because they dont and now you can cut your own hair at home with some gizmo.

It's hardly run it's course... We haven't even touched on the 'discriminatory' price women have to pay for women getting their hair 'done' compared to the much smaller price men pay...

And yes this was a 'feminist' argument/complaint in the 1980's in New Zealand. Feminist women complained loudly that women were being discriminated against because they had to pay much more than men did to get their 'hair cut'.

Their suggested solution was that women should not have to pay any more than men to 'achieve equality' at the hair dressers... Either that or make men pay the same as women did. And that was when were gender specific, a women could not get their hair cut at a barbers because they were female, and any man that went to a woman's hairdressers for a haircut was one of those 'funny blokes'...

No sir, the price women pay comes down to 2 things:

1) Womens hair is usually more complicated, longer, and takes considerably longer. Time+Complication==Money

With joint a/c, I see what my SO pays, and as she earns her own money (and considerably more than me these semi-retired days) I really can't react at all, despite thinking that for the price of one colour and cut I could probably get 10 barber cuts.
I make up for it - I get her to cut my hair - and I don't even charge her for the privilege. I do bribe slightly - threaten that I'll DIY with a #1 comb and the clippers - then she's always quick to offer her services, lest we might need to appear together somewhere in public.

TBH - she actually enjoys it, apparently.

There's some "thing" about women's hair - hard to define without being apparently sexist, but if after a visit to the local hairdresser and I said something smart when she returned, like "hey - you've had your ears lowered", I'd be probably sleeping in the chicken coop for a week.

Heh, my wife doesn't care if I don't notice, and probably wouldn't react if I did.

I pay $25-30 for a flat top hair cut (of which precious few barbers ever can actually do despite claiming they can). My wife pays $40-60 with no colour. Her hair is probably 20 x longer than mine. I don't consider that price difference of significance at all.

I know a colour and or straighten (I do prefer her hair straightened) could cost a lot more, but she is usually gone for a morning having that done. If a plumber worked in your house 2-3 hours you'd pay a lot more.

I know some places charge stupid amounts of money, but at the end of the day, sometimes you pay that, for the special attention you get when you are there.

If I had my tips frosted and a style cut done, it would probably set me back between $50-150 I'd guess. I have never done this, but if I did, I wouldn't complain.

The last barbers I went to was all male barbers. There were several women in the shop at the same time. Not sure if they were there for a cut or just chatting to others. Nice atmos actually.

I think there's a generational thing there too - pretty sure our son used to pay serious $$$ for fancy haircuts, but with tight afro curls, just letting it go natural looks better in my opinion and others, though he has been called Sideshow Bob a bit lately. One of his girl friends has long dreads - now that's a serious commitment, and pretty expensive to get them professionally re-wound - if that's how it's described - to keep them looking good. They do look good on her too.

From an evolutionary POV, I don't think there's any doubt that human hair evolved for "looks" rather than any specific functional need - a small layer of tight fuzz would have been adequate - but look what happened.

Sure, I think we can agree on that, though from a functionality perspective, in Winter we would have longer hair. Year round I have a short flat top, as short as the barber can get it whilst keeping it flat.

People spend all sorts of crazy money on vanity items, hair included, I don't think it's reasonable to claim as @maxlv has that it's unavoidable and that a gender surcharge is being applied. There are other just as reasonable explanations.
