I'm pretty sure you'll never see me in a Costco - at least not to shop. The very idea of having to buy a limited selection of goods in the form of a pallet or bucket in exchange for a membership fee in order to "save" makes me want to grab the shopping bag to buy fresh food at the nearest market in the exact quantity needed to supplement those in my anti-food waste bag to make a quality meal. Who wants to chew on a pallet of pizza for weeks just because it was cheap?

LOL

Many goods are displayed on pellets, to save on shelf stacking labor. You don't have to take the whole pellet. Single pizza's are available Below is $15.99 (1.1kg)

May be an image of food and indoor

Also the stuff is not cheap two 640g pams pizza's at $3.38 each from pack n save would be a much cheaper option. But based on the slice I had from the food court, costco pizza seems quite good.

There were a lot of things that I looked at, and thought it looked good, but the quality it was offered in didn't even close to remotely work for my household (normally 3 people, but will be 2 people for the next week).

Costco will not replace a weekly supermarket shop for most households (unless your household has enough pantry space to store sugar you buy in 25kg bags). Based on what I see today, most shoppers are picking up non perishables, and stuff like giant packs of chicken or mince to repack and freeze.

For costco to work, the household needs to be both time rich and have reasonable financial resources. Took me cira 4 hours to do the costco trip today incl travel time. And for it to work, the household needs to be able to afford to buy several weeks of say toilet paper in one transaction (and have space to store said toilet paper).

Thanks. That has helped me to decide to leave a visit until things ‘normalise’. Maybe a week or two…….

@Scott3 When you write “cira”, do you actually mean “circa” as in “approximately”

Next two weeks are school holidays...

Yeah I do. Just realized I have been writing this wrong for many years. thanks for bring this to my attention.

And some of the focus on multipack's seems odd. Why sell a 3x800ml pack of finish rinse aid (three bottles shrink wrapped together). A single 2.4L pack would be a lot better environmentally.

That is because not all manufacturers can spin their lines up to do a larger bottle, so making a multipack that isnt sold elsewhere is a way to keep their other customers happy.

500ml is the standard size for finish rince aid, so 800ml is already a special size.

But I guess you right, easier to just wrap a few together than come up with an additional pack size.

A bit frustrating as a customer. That wrap is pure waste, and reduces flexibility If I wanted 2 or 4 bottles i am out of luck at costco. Would seem nicer to just have individual bottles, and if they want have a price for singles, and a price for 3+...

Apparently they had to close early last night (I don't know the reason), which resulted in many pissed off people. (second hand info)

quickymart:

How bad/long is the queue for walkups? Half an hour?

Depends on time of day. Was short when I arrived today.

And although I was in the other queue, I would say it moves pritty fast. They weren't counting people into the door, so the only metering is the card check, and they barely glance at each persons card. (card issuing is a different, shorter line).

I'm not going to get into a nutritional battle about prepared fast food, but pizza is not necessarily known as the healthiest food either way. Neither are hot dogs, hamburgers, donuts, industrial sugar and other foods that have been "screwed with" as processed convenience food. Meat consumption and widespread diseases are on the rise, and not without reason. The quantity makes the poison.

When I make pizza, you won't find any of the impressive list of dubious ingredients on your pizza box.

Finally, the whole reason I'm watching this thread. These look like a pitch at the more upmarket New World style pizzas that are $19 / $20 and P&S/NW, but they have a limited range and aren't the bargain they once were. I'll definitely be trying these.

I’m trying to work out if there are any Costco stores in Germany? If not, or not close, your assertion is kind of moot.

That being said, the wonderful thing about a free market is you have the choice to shop where you wish. Long may it continue.

That was not a criticism of those who do - no! It was just my own personal point of view that I allowed myself to express.

No, we don't have a Costco here. But insignificant chains like Aldi, Lidl, Kaufland etc. come from Germany and I try to avoid them as much as possible (it's not all black or white - good or bad) that work a little differently, but argue the same way with basic shopping.

But I always find it funny the guys who get out of their Porsche with the latest iPhone, don't pay a parking fee or park where there's no stopping and buy the last bit of nutritional rubbish to eat at Aldi, as if they needed it. Maybe they can do arithmetic, but they have no idea about food culture and nutrition. In the future, Porsche will have to build things even bigger and wider so that their customers can still fit in.

You have to be clear about what you're letting yourself in for and unfortunately that seems to be less and less the case these days - I don't want to go into that any further. That should have been it.

I was refering to the flavor being good. I don't think there is a single offering in in the food court which would be considered nutritious.

That said, their hot-dogs are 100% pork, so don't have the additives common from other vendors (in the USA it is 100% beef).

I think what you do, and making your own is the best option if you want a low ingredient count pizza.

And of course, costco is well known for having many isles filled with junk food, sold only in large quantities:

And on Obesity rates, Should note that NZ is pritty high up the list. 22nd on the below, ahead of the USA (26th), Aust (29th), and way above Germany at 79th (which still has a worrying 22.3% of the population obese).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_obesity_rate

So I think cosco's offering will do just fine here...

Yupp, I specifically don't want to exclude us from the bad development.

Maybe cira means ‘approximately circa’.

Anyone who's been out there today able to comment on what the crowds/queues/parking is like?
Given the disgusting weather outside I don't think taking the bus is a great idea and will drive instead, but don't want to wait in the pouring down rain for 30 minutes just to get in the door.

Don't bother.

We have a friend who just tried. Admittedly they drove, but waited ages, finally got into the store and it was packed. I didn’t ask her if she got into the Costco car park itself or was directed to the gravel pit.
