Schools have been ordered to close until 7 Feb to reduce road traffic.

Sort of..... most will close, but a few smaller ones whose staff are local might open...

The secretary of education has asked all schools, kura, early learning services, and tertiary institution in Auckland must close for physical attendance and instruction until February 7.

"School and kura can open or remain open for onsite instruction but need to provide distance learning," said Iona Holsted, the secretary for Education.

The media have obviously promoted David Letele to emergency management expert. The “gym owner and community leader” has been quoted by the NZHerald as calling for Wayne Brown’s resignation over his handling of the situation. The Herald includes in Letele’s credentials that he helped health authorities access the PI community during the pandemic response. As if that has anything to do with a fast evolving weather event. But then I’ve come to expect that from the NZH who have been on Brown’s case ever since he beat Efeso Collins in the mayoral race. Brown is certainly not good at PR, but we have been spoiled by people who have been media trained (and have a natural gift) like the previous PM and mayors like Bob Parker (during the Christchurch earthquake). I doubt Collins would have been any more effective in the actual response than Brown, but probably would have been better at the PR message. Including telling people to “Be Kind”. All leaders rely on their support staff. Otherwise we would just need a council of one, where the Mayor knew and did everything.

I fail to see what Collins has to do with anything other than whataboutism.

Brown has made his own bed with the media, now he has to lie in it. He's hidden from the media, preferring to engage by press release.

The coverage hasn't been unfair, his performance has been inept. Being the face of council to the public is a core part of his role.

Sorry, can’t help with your vision problems.

The comment I made is illustrative of the fact that, in the case of the candidates we were presented with in the last mayoral race, neither would have been likely to influence the outcome of the latest emergency. The dynamic nature of these events means the officials are far more important than the politicians.
Aucklanders voted for “Mr Fixit” so have to live with the good and bad parts of his leadership.

Out of interest, who did David Letele support in that mayoral race?

OK, to use official word, directed to close.

Full details on the MoE site. In summary:

- All education institutions Pukekohe-Wellsofrd to close until after Waitangi weekend for physical onsite attendance. Distance learning OK.

- Early Learning Services may allow the physical attendance of any child whose parent needs them to do so but must otherwise be closed

Brown is the mayor, he deserves to be judged on his performance, not on some hypotheical scenario of someone else being mayor. Saying people in Auckland have to "live with" inept performance is daft.

He's responsible for everything the council does, not just the good bits.

Jesus, another week of school holidays. Neither of my boys schools were affected at all, but they still have to stay home? Ridiculous.

Closing the barn door after all the horses have not only bolted but settled into another farm down the road, like the MetService alert the day after the flooding.

You’re obviously an expert in emergency management, so I assume you’ll be putting your hand up to take his place?

Once again you choose to miss my point. It’s about the official’s response that matters more than politicians.

Is anyone really expected to believe that the NZ Herald was ever anti Wayne Brown?

The NZ Herald had one of their own columnists, Matthew Hooton, working part time for the Herald and part time for Wayne Brown. I wouldn't be surprised if the Auckland ratepayers are now paying Hooton to advise the Mayor that the NZ Herald helped elect.

I'm not surprised that some people in the Herald are having second thoughts now after this debacle.

As for Efeso Collins, on Friday night he was helping communicate locations of evacuation centres and other emergency related information and he has continued doing so throughout the weekend.

Lol. No I'm not an expert on emergency management. That's not required to see when someone is out of their depth.

The Herald also has Simon Wilson as as their primary columnist on council issues. He's very left of centre and has been hostile to Brown since he announced his candidacy.

The media coverage hasn't been particularly political IMO, it's been asking generally reasonable questions that need to be asked. There have been some dumb questions but that's to be expected, as is the odd gaffe from the politicians and officials.

Quite telling though is that Brown has only given 2 interviews out of 108 requests. That makes me think he's scared of something - maybe facing up to the public and answering hard questions?
That's just my interpretation though.

Not really wanting to get bogged down in this, but you don't have to be an expert in emergency management to be able to see when it's being done very badly. I don't know how to fix a car, but I'm pretty good at telling when it's broken down.

I agree, but while no one can stop a disaster, some people can help mitigate it for the people affected. I feel that saying someone is inept is appropriate if it affects those in need, or who could have been made more aware earlier and thus been less affected. As long as its constructive and accurate.
