Has everybody overlooked the fact part of the reason for the demise of the company was it's poor financial performance selling too many $1 pies?

Yes, it seems that has been overlooked :)

myfullflavour: The price should be $1.70 exactly.

Calculations:

$1 minus 12.5% GST = $0.89 rounded

Inflation calculator:

http://www.rbnz.govt.nz/statistics/0135595.html

Food
that cost $0.89
in quarter 1 of 1990
would have cost

$1.48

in quarter 1 of 2013

Add 15% GST

=$1.70.

McDs are overcharging by $2.80. Fools.

You failed to account for commodity price increases for the raw ingredients, which have greatly outpaced inflation (cheese, beef, etc).

I thought it was because mcd's purchased the company for  the land, where they close down GP ones, and open up new McD's.  Georgie pie was not always nationwide either, they did experience quick growth in the early 90's. It seem to only be in Wellington for a few years Often you see companies that experience quick growth, experience problems and go under.

Not at all, but it still makes the $4.50 too expensive. Would $2 for a GP back in the day have worked? Who knows? Doesn't matter.

I would probably pay $5-6 for one of the good georgie pies, but the dollar one was always pretty average and not a lot different to a small big ben pie which is less than $2 at gas stations etc.

I used to like their blackberry & apple pies. Sadly, I don't think these are being brought back.

Yep that was a nice one. They had a nice Mexican one as well. Will depend on the success or the single pies I guess.

So we really have to make the small uninspiring pie a success in the hope of getting the good ones in the future.

My partner is a life-long vegetarian. That was all she ever had there. Unpleasant memories.

I remember going there as a kid.. I love a pie... and I love 80s nostalgia.. but their pies were just crap.

I'm late to this thread

They were tasty and fresh, and very small. Worth it at 50c and $1. Cost more now, but $4-50??

And, will they be Georgie Pie's or a Macca's new pie labelled GP?

I can't claim that as the reason I bought them, as I'm a committed carnivore Laughing

I just liked them, Whereas I never thought their meat pies were that good. Soggy pastry, too salty, a lot of gravy and gelatin, and stuff all actual meat. On balance, probably worse than the Big Ben ones from the supermarket. Their blackberry and apple was, however, very very tasty.

You forget that most of the time the pies cost $2.00 to $2.60.  It was only in their last year that they were $1 and usually smaller so a large pie at $4  today  would seem reasonable..
