Also thanks @dazzanz

Octopus is my cheapest option even without trying to work out peak solar export rates.

Another thanks for @dazzanz

I only have data from March but it really shows how good the Z plan was with solar and battery. Since Z was wholesale rates on export I just set at .17c pretty sure it worked out higher.

Has anyone who is currently with Octopus tried using their provided CSV with dazzanz's Power Usage Analyser? For the life of me I can't get it to work - even reducug the csv down to a day's worth of usage, I can't get it to apply the mapping.

So Meridian finally sent through my new rates - I can't say I'm surprised, but I'm still disappointed.

They will shift me from a time of use plan with Flick to a simple Anytime/Controlled plan. This will cost me 20% or $671 more, or $551 more including their $120 credit for the first year. That comparison is between Meridian's rates today, and Flick's rates as of April 2025.

Their executive promised time of use plans for Flick customers, so it's pretty poor form to go back on their word: https://www.consumer.org.nz/articles/flick-electric-sale-to-meridian-what-to-do-if-you-re-a-customer

Naturally, I won't be sticking around with Meridian!

Update: I called Meridian and they have confirmed that they will not be offering time of use plans, except their EV plan (half price night rate) which requires proof of EV ownership. Because EV's use a different flavour of electrons?

Crazy huh. I emailed them to ask if they were giving any heads up on when the change would occur (just so I can start the move to Octopus in advance). They won't be so there will a period during the change over where you will be on their plan till change over occurs, not a huge problem, but would have been nice to get a date.

Also anyone moving to Octopus that wants $50 credit, a mate sent me a referral link I assume you can use it more than once?  Octopus Referral

That is the most bizarre thing I've heard...   How do they stop you turning on heaters at night when you're only supposed to be using it for your EV? ;D ;D

Got the email and moved to the freedom plan. my rates seem cheap to others here.  228.72 daily charge, 27.63 for something called economy 24 hour and controlled night at 18.79 and $10 a month credit for a year

Common sense is not as common as you think.

For those in Christchurch, what company are you looking at if jumping from Merdian?

I am after a company who offers Orion's peak and off peak hours.

Cheers

I've initiated a switch back to Powershop, my previous provider before Flick many years ago. Owned by Meridian, but at least they have time of use charging with five different rates for Orion network customers (peak, shoulder, off peak, weekend, and super off peak) depending on day of week and time of day.

Got my email yesterday.
hey didn't offer me the EV pla (though it must be obvious from my usage I have something that uses a lot of off-peak power).

The plan they offered would end up being by far the most expensive of the plans I looked at a couple of weeks back.

I'm off to Genesis - works out about $40 a month cheaper than the rest based on my location and usage. And, I'll get Chargenet charging at my home rates.

Ain't their rates based on gamifying your power use by buying packs etc? From my calculations they worked out more expensive than other providers.

I did exactly this. The Chargenet perk has been handy especially as we've got 2 EV's so sometimes will shoot down the road to charge my car while the other is charging if we've both been out.

Where I live, Powershop seems competitive and has the advantage of using more of Orion's time-of-use rates such as Shoulder instead of Peak for weekdays 11am-5pm. Genesis only had two rates, peak and off-peak, when I checked with my home address.

It's possible to use Powershop as a normal "set and forget" provider, no buying packs, one monthly bill, and miss out on the specials. It would probably increase the total cost by a few percent once the fixed daily charge is included.

Despite submitting an online form, I'd not heard back from Meridian well over a week later, so called them up (answered within 5 mins!) to enquire about their EV plan pricing. Recently got email with the rates as below (GST inclusive):

237.72c/day - Daily charge

38.51c/kWh - Day rate

18.48c/kWh - Night rate (9pm-7am)

Their standard rates offered are:

267.79c/day

24.44c/kWh.

Genesis has better rates on their EV plan for day/night (31.61c/kWh and 15.80c/kWh), but higher daily charge (294.39c/day).
I'll need to plug this into a spreadsheet tonight/over the weekend, with stats from our last couple of bills from Flick (though this will be somewhat skewed as I've started a new job and no longer work at home).

@caffynz what does Octopus look like where you are? Night rates pretty good in Wairarapa.
