When all the fanfare dies down you'll probably find all the backlash was driven via Australia.

If sales hadn't plumeted in OZ then they wouldn't have given a dam about us Kiwi's.

Shame the price will now move up again rather sharply.

Good article on how consumers are partly to blame.

It would be a tad ironic to move the price up straight away after they told consumers the addition of Palm Oil was for flavour and texture.

The price will move you can bet your bottom dollar on it!

They could never keep their story straight. An email my wife received after sending in a complaint told her the reason the chocolate tasted different was due to the new shape and dispersion across the tongue or some such nonsense, and had nothing to do with the palm oil.

Being a chocoholic I complained bitterly to Cadburys regarding the downsizing of their chocolate bars.
Told them not to bother sending a reply but just go back to where they were - below is their reply

Thank you for taking time to contact us regarding our New Look products.
At Cadbury, we are committed to providing people with quality products they
enjoy and trust, therefore we were disappointed to receive your comments.

As you requested we are not responding re your comments about the change in
sizing of our chocolate, however we did want to clarify the Dunedin Factory
situation.

We are committed New Zealand and we doing whatever we can to ensure we
continue to be a long-term manufacturer and employer in New Zealand and
this investment is a big part of securing our long-term future in the
country.

In August last year we announced our $153NZ million investment to secure
the longer term future of our local manufacturing operations by
transforming our chocolate manufacturing sites across New Zealand and New
Zealand into specialist centres of excellence.

To ensure Dunedin is a key manufacturing facility for Cadbury, we are
spending $51NZ million to upgrade and transform the Dunedin factory into a
centre of excellence for chocolate assortments. This is in addition to the
$20NZ million already spent in 2007/08 to build a centre of excellence at
Dunedin in chocolate crumb – the base ingredient in Cadbury Dairy Milk for
Asia Pacific. Quite simply, without this investment in Dunedin and its
specialization in chocolate assortments and chocolate crumb the future of
our Dunedin site would be poor.

When our work to create a centre of excellence in chocolate assortments is
complete in 2010, Dunedin will produce Cadbury’s chocolate assortment range
for the Australian and New Zealand markets, with approximately 80% of the
Dunedin product being exported to Australia.

As a result of Dunedin being upgraded to produce the assortment products
that were made in Australia, the moulded blocks that were produced at
Dunedin are now made in Claremont in Tasmania.

Dunedin will continue to manufacture, Jaffas, Pebbles, Pineapple Lumps,
Chocolate Fish, Buzz bars, Pinky Bar, and Perky Nana as well as some other
products.

For many years, our manufacturing sites in Australia and New Zealand have
made the highest quality great tasting Cadbury products for both countries.
A number of NZ favourite chocolate blocks including Black Forest, Cadbury
Desserts range, Caramello and Old Gold have been made in Australia for a
few years now. New Zealand and Australian consumers love and trust the
products we make for them and we look forward to that continuing.

Being a professional chocolate maker for over 30 years (not with Cadbury) I can ensure you that the only reason to add palm oil to chocolate is for cost reasons. Yes, palm oil will alter the mouth feel of the finished chocolate due to a different melting point of the fat. The reason manufacturers in NZ get away with changing key ingredients in any food is that the food regulations are virtually nonexistent in this respect. In Europe for example it would be illegal to sell Chocolate with any other fat than Cocoa Butter or Milk fat. You could produce and sell such a product but would not be allowed to call it Chocolate.
On the other hand, compound chocolate is produced in far larger numbers in New Zealand than Chocolate. The main ingredient in Compounded chocolate next to sugar is Palm kernel fat. Perhaps something most Kiwi's don't know.

I just bought a block of Whittikars Classic Bittersweet Dark Block and I think I'm totally ruined for any other kind of chocolate now. I don't think its POSSIBLE to get any better than this!
