reven: does anyone if any sony bravia tvs work with this in nz?

the website (when it was working) clearly claimed you could use quickflix in NZ on sony Bravia internet TVs, but I checked this morning and mine had no updates pending and no apps or anything loaded on there where you would expect.

/me runs down to jb hifi to buy a new tv :P

update: cant find that tv anywhere.... not even on sonys website, googling hx750 comes with a dvd recorder

it appears they are uploading changes to their website, not stuff that was on it before is gone and a menu has changed a lot.

no longer a "packages" page, and cant see how to view whats available for streaming

and they have some pretty old movies in their pay per view list, eg "Wimbledon (2004)" http://www.quickflix.co.nz/Catalogue/Title/Wimbledon/21401?catalogueFunction=16

Out of all the current (and old!) sci-fi/fantasy TV series/movies I searched for, all they had was the first season of the New Dr Who.. pretty pathetic, really.

OK, not the greatest launch of all time.

Oh, well. I'll give it a day or so as I am sure it will be sorted.

So my two questions when it all gets sorted out will be:

What kind of hardware do I need? We have two TVs and use both about equally so I want this on both somehow. We are due some TV upgrades so Sony may just have jumped to the front of the queue. I don't care what the hardware needed is just tell me so I can sort it.
Will the streaming be smooth? I hate rental DVDs because not many things make me madder than scratched ones, is buffering the scratch? I know is is a complicated issue but as a consumer I don't care, I just want to watch my movie. Tell me what I have to do to make that happen.

Once this is sorted I am sure the content side of things will sort itself out. Sorry local video store, I guess it is over between us.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

You want to see growth then support it so they can do just that it may suck that there's no HBO but hey that's just the current offering and really people should not be so narrow minded to try other things than just what the big $$$ companies push out.

Just as an aside HBO own 15% of quickflix..... so SKy's monopoly may not last much beyond its initial period...

According to Sky's head honcho they don't have a monopoly on video on demand content:

Computerworld: “That right (to distribute content) is known as subscription video on demand, I don’t have any of those rights. The studios won’t let me buy rights unless I’ve got a way to exploit it. Even if they did, you can’t get an exclusive,” Fellet told Computerworld.

Perhaps the Herald are getting rights to broadcast mixed up with rights to stream.

By the way, those HX750 TVs are filtering into stores now.

Interesting sign up experience here...

1. Visit quickflix.co.nz
2. Click "Join Now"
3. Enter details including e-mail address
4. Error: "This email address already exists. Please reactivate your account."
> Note, keep in mind that I used to be a member of Quickflix Australia a few years back
5. Click on reactivate your account link,
6. Remember old details, and try and login...
7. Error: "The provided login is not valid in the current region."

Oh no, seems I hit a use case they didn't expect... alias time I guess.

Edit: Has anyone had issues signing up using American Express? Failed twice for me

For the people saying "oh but there is next to no content..." I actually think that it's a pretty good door opener to show the type of content that they are thinking about, even if it's not a licensing issue, they may want to trickle it out, it's not like they've started with "Season 5" content, they are starting from the beginning, maybe end of April will see season 2 stuff going up, et al.

After reading this post I went back and had another look. Have you seen the pay per view section. How old are those movies?

Basically $9.00 to $17.00 per month is a very cheap price for a legal option.

So it isn't perfect.

I don't pirate so it is better than scratched DVDs from the store or waiting for Fastso to post discs.

I hope the content gets better, but that isn't going to happen without support.

It's more a case of me having no interest in the content they have on offer, and having a better collection of content I want just sitting on my shelves. Why would I sign up to a service that has nothing I want...on the promise of more interesting content coming later. That's just me paying money with no guarantee of getting anything for it....which is essentially a sham business model.

Well......the selection is extremely underwhelming and although I doubt Ill watch any of the TV series, other than Faulty Towers :) I like the selection they have and can only hope it increases as time goes by.

There are a couple of movies I would want to watch so $10 isnt a lot more than a DVD from the shop so Im happy to give it a crack for a couple of months.

Fingers crossed the selection increases significantly.

Okay, a report on Quickflix, finally purchased (using Mastercard) and with a new e-mail alias.

Haven't tried PC streaming yet, but I managed to get the Sony TV we have hooked up fine.

With a KDL40CX520 already registered to Sony (on their old site), I went to https://internet.sony.tv signed in, transferred the account to the new Sony Entertainment Network (https://account.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/), in the Devices page, I clicked on the "My BRAVIA TV" device, Quickflix was listed as disabled, clicked "Enable" followed the prompts (including redirect to Quickflix NZ site), returned, clicked on "I've done it" and then on the TV selected "Refresh Network Content".

Pictures are pretty good on our slowish (2.5Mbit) connection too, so I'm impressed. Bravo Quickflix, Bravo Sony.
