I won't post again and again. He did a nazi salute. In my opinion, based on his previous words, support for AfD and Reform UK and now this gesture, I still think he's a racist nazi.

You can take offence to anything you like, it is your choice, but please offer others the same curtesy and refrain from using comments like "I especially expected better among GZers". You are insinuating your opinion is "better" than mine.

I won't apologise, I'm not just insinuating that, I'm saying it outright. Defence of even the appearance of Nazism is not acceptable.

And that's the last I'll say on this topic.

I realise one clip shows the gesture to the crowd, and the other doesn't. But I am surprised that the timing of the comment "my heart goes out to you" dictates whether it was a Nazi salute or not.

In my mind this is a pretty clear indication of his intention, whether before or after the gesture.

But as already mentioned, happy to agree to disagree.

I think a healthy debate about these sorts of things is beneficial to all parties. It forces us all to properly research and formalise our arguments, and if after that we both disagree then all good!

Happy to leave it, but if I am honest, a little disappointed we couldn't have a civilised debate on the topic. I am genuinely interested in why you guys feel so strongly about this.

All the best.

We had the debate. The debate ended with a "no side changing its mind" result.

The final verdict will come in time.

My ultimate view on Musk will be based on whether he actually goes on his starship to Mars....

For more context the full speech is three minutes long. Musk performs the gesture twice. My personal view is most people know this kind of gesture is offensive and avoid doing anything at all that looks even close to this.

The hand is flat and rigid in both cases. The gesture does not look anything like an expansive thank you gesture. Musk's audible grunt as he extends his first flat hand in the air gives it an additional F--- Y-- I don't care what you think aspect. Personally I think it's one of those gratuitous "owning the libs" haha kind of offensive gesture, which so often served several purposes during the previous Trump term. I think we could have all done without that.

My favourite thing so far has been people saying that this is a nervous tick due to him having Aspergers/Autism. Funnily enough even though I know quite a few people on the spectrum, none of them have popped off a couple of nazi salutes.

As for those arguing that what he has said changes the context of the salute, please keep in mind that actions are defined by the words spoken and not accepted historical usage when I tell you I wish you prosperity and deeply respect you while I give you the double middle finger.

I do tend to agree, he is flirting with danger with this gesture, and it would have been better if he hadn't, thereby removing the risk of misinterpretation altogether.

However here is the section of the speech, unedited, which in my mind shows his true intentions, i.e. a heartfelt thanks to everyone who voted;

https://x.com/OrvaEsh/status/1881460831323644266

But hey, I think we have established our personal opinions on how it can be perceived can greatly differ, based on our previous biases and opinions about Musk.

I think my problem with the "debate" in this thread is comments like;

  • "There's no way to deny it. He's a racist nazi trash."
  • "Some of you folks disappoint me"
  • "I won't apologise, I'm not just insinuating that, I'm saying it outright"
  • "I wish you prosperity and deeply respect you while I give you the double middle finger"

These are not constructive, respectful or contributing to a civilised debate. They are stating that your opinion is the only one that matters and anything that disagrees is just plain wrong.

I am not saying you are wrong, but the reality is none of truly know what his intentions were, so it is all speculation and subjective opinion!

Why does him doing a nazi salute need to be a debate? I don't care if you disagree with me, it's clear what his intent was lol. I've never seen 'give my heart' platitudes do that motion.

Your defense is the defense that all his fans are using and it's ridiculous. He literally supports the AFD and wants to 'liberate Europe'. If it walks like a damn duck then it's a duck.

And no I will not debate this, sorry to say. This isn't a debate, not everything needs to be a debate so you can defend your favourite billionaire. Everyone is visually reacting to what he's doing.

"Giving his heart" has to be the most hilarious take on a nazi salute I've seen

There’s plenty of real stuff to criticize Elon Musk and Donald Trump for, no need to invent drama. It just makes us look like we’re running low on material.

You really think him throwing a Sieg Heil during the inauguration lunch is not something worthy of criticism?

You are seeing things that are not there. Try Occam's Razor instead of Godwin's Law.

The video is not difficult to interpret. Occam's Razor pretty much aligns with Goodwin's law on this one.

Trump is just a useful idiot. Musk is the really dangerous one. It is a mistake to underestimate him.

It must be a gesture that a character in Path of Exile 2 does. Musk has been playing the game pretty much 24/7 for the last few weeks to earn the top character there, so he probably associates himself with a character there. Surely.

You can look at who he associates with and boosts.
There is a context.

Full video is worse,
Musk does this twice, with gusto.
Roman salute, well maybe Mussolini the great II Duce would recognize it and not split hairs
A certain grouping has adopted in modern times as 'soft cover'.

The excuses are part of normalization.

Like
One day after sustained pedo accusations he apologizes, slinks away when share price hits a bump.
Then back at it once that is out with more indirect comments.

Mr 'smartest in any room'  with more than enough resources to know facts.
Statements like 12 year old bride when he surely on a snap of his fingers can find out the wife of 7 years is 40.
He likes alternative facts.

Recently detailed denial over SARS-Cov2, the bet that US will never see 35K cases while Italy was burning. Still seems to be tied to his alternative silo.

Leader of DOGE a top expert gamer, where his 'dodge' is renowned.
One day he is claiming 'false valor' as a ranked gamer with unique ability and brilliance.
The beautiful mind. Then its "well everyone cheats" if you can afford you can cheat outrageously.
I expect a little while later it will be back to no one knows more about ...... than me again.

There are parallels as similar group last millennium did to somewhat disguise their intentions.
It was there to see if you cared.
Turned out quite differently which still confuses literalists today.

Techbro, Coiners and NFTers know how to amplify the power of the rug pull.
