You do not think that they should have had the capability some time ago like the rest of us? To me it smacks of poor planning, out-dated work practices and a complete lack of innovation.

I know of a company in the technology sector that ran a survey around its employees and found a large number of them didn't have broadband at home.

Probably because some were young (flat situation) and ended up using their mobile data (it was "unlimited" for a while) instead of having to bother with another bill to split.

There are lots of reasons...

When you sign a NDA with a Date1 for some information to be ok to release, a Date2 for more information to be ok to release and product in retail at a certain date - which is fourteen days after the NDA was signed... And no sign of said product being available for review - so why ask for the NDA anyway?

This NDA stuff reminds me of an actor being interviewed about up coming films and was asked if he was the new badman to which he replied he wasn't allowed to say anything thereby confirming he had a NDA agreement and so yes he was the new batman...

The only issue I'd have with it is that the Ministry of "Innovation" is somewhat behind the 8-ball compared to some other Govt Depts who were already well set up for remote working etc and the move to WFH during lockdown was not really that much of a big deal.

What do you think would have happened to someone at MBIE who proposed, say last December, that they spend millions of dollars on fancy laptops and tell everyone to work from home?

And on the remote chance that it would have been approved, what do you think the media would have done to whoever at MBIE approved it?

Work from home was a reasonable well-established practice before COVID. Other departments have done it previously, so my guess is, not much at all actually.

If what they purchased were suitable for in and out of office use, then all the better, which would have been the case.

December?  Last year?

Oh, still not really innovative considering we've had the facility to work from home for at least the last 11 years that I've been where I am.  And the reason for it was "Pandemic Response Capability" based on one of the earlier swine flue potential threats.  The exact means by which the ability to WFH has been provided has changed a few times over the years but the initial one was VPN from home PC which required very little outlay.

[Side rant]
Why is it that it's ok for private companies to spend what they want on all manner of things, necessary or not, but the second a Govt Dept tries to maintain the bare minimum or try to provide employees with decent working conditions and equipment they get reamed in the media for it.

The days of Gliding On are long gone.  We've had decades of "do more with less" and "there's no money for pay rises so don't expect anything from your performance review" mandates from above.  Somewhat over being treated like we should be some kind of second class slaves and grateful for that.
[/end rant]

Having competitors cold calling my clients and then continuing to contact them after they have been told they aren't interested.

I'm looking at you WebGenius in Kapiti and MediaGiant in Porirua.

The old sales tactic of "stay close, so if the competition slips up you can pounce"...

There is an expectation from some people that public servants should do perfect work with inadequate resources for substandard pay because they work for the government. There is clearly no waste or screw ups in the private sector so they all get moved to the public sector.

I really wish I was being sarcastic.

To be clear, my issue is not the expenditure but the fact that they hadn’t already moved, as a department in charge of leading innovation, to a position of being remotely innovative.

Organisations that tell you the PS5 will be on sale “at lunchtime” and are sold out by 1220!

My lunchtime is 1300. Why be so vague?
