BlinkyBill: in my hard copy version of the OED as well, but difficult to hyperlink a hard copy authority. Your referenced article notes it is acceptable usage. You need to move on with the times - it’s no longer 1930’s pastoral England that we all live in.

I see absolutely no need to move on where I consider that moving on will lead to a worse position than not doing so.

There are vastly bigger issues in this world to get into a lather over than whether a word or two have correct spelling.

I guess the self appointed English language defence militia is one of those small things that annoy me. Now I am annoyed that this annoys me and I have the re-programme it away dammit.

My proposed thread would be devoted to the act of pedantry, not to pedants.

Everyone would not correct the others, however. Rather, each one would correct one of the others in sequential fashion, depending on who was the first to post.
