I vote for the above. Good points.

I just read a misspelled post. The difference between 'affective' and 'effective' is real. So is 'there', 'their', 'they're' and everything else that depends on a modicum of accuracy and precision. Being correct does make a real difference. Get over it and learn how to do it right!

To the arrogant pedantic folk who show discrimination and nastiness over the odd spelling or grammar mistake. Get over yourselves, also you might want to do some research about the difficulties of learning disabilities and English as a second language.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I have never needed a funny cat video so badly.

Can a video featuring a funny cat be unamusing?

(I hate the English language)

Perhaps when expectations of amusement are exaggerated :P

Big leap there Mike. No-one is showing discrimination and nastiness over the odd spelling or grammar mistake. What we are annoyed about are those who insist they are correct when they are not, and those who suggest it’s OK not to try.

@BlinkyBill consider your statement regarding rejecting 70% of CVS based on bad spelling or grammar. That could well be seen as discrimination.

I get triggered over this as my three sons inherited Dyslexia and were bullied at school for it. They have bad dyslexia and language was very hard for them and my youngest had to change schools he was so badly bullied. My oldest has BSC 1st class honours, Masters with Distinction and currently doing a PHD. My middle son served as a NCO in the military police and now works for a aircraft company and my youngest as a senior account director in the UK.

They all had CVs rejected probably for spelling mistakes. It is why my oldest went University after he also left the NZ Army.

I just like to suggest that you don’t reject based on spelling or grammar.

Mike I understand your emotion about this but I think you are leaping to the wrong conclusion. If your kids were bullied at school, it is the school's fault for not putting a stop to it.

With today's tools, anyone can avoid basic spelling and grammatical mistakes. If those show up on a CV, the employer has no way of knowing if it is a disability or just sloppiness. They have to make judgements on the basis of the information provided.

@Rikkitic if you had Dyslexia you would realise that spell and grammar check really is not that smart. Invisible disabilities are real and very debilitating. There is no justification for discrimination and unwarranted mocking and uninvited correction and English lessons.

I used to be close to a child who had dyslexia and she was able to achieve considerable improvement with the aid of a specialist remedial teacher. It is not something set in stone.

You are right that spelling and grammar checkers don't catch everything but they do filter out the worst errors. If I was preparing a document as important as a CV that might determine my future employment, and I knew I had difficulty with written language, I would take the extra trouble to make sure there were no errors in that document. I would go over it again and again, checking each word with a dictionary if I had to. I would ask others I had confidence in to check it for me. Maybe I would even pay a professional to help prepare it. There are always solutions for this kind of thing.

This is my last post on this. Obviously you feel strongly about it and I don't have any more to say about it.

As a disabled person I get tired of having to ask for help. Unfortunately there are many that make it very hard and demeaning. All I ask is people think before they judge. You don’t know the pain and emotions on the other side. Reduce barriers don’t put up barriers.

I’m glad your kids have done well in spite of their inherited dyslexia.

However, my business relies on accuracy and attention to detail as a differentiator in the market. We pride ourselves on doing things right the first time and to a high standard of quality. IT (coding, infrastructure configuration) depends on a no-prisoners approach to correct formatting and language otherwise there will be mistakes made, potentially disastrous; or at least wasted time.

Imagine if doctors and surgeons mis-spelled prescriptions or notes! What about builders mis-measuring dimensions for your flash new house? Etc.

It is a good idea to proof-read and spell-check resumes before submitting them; and indeed get someone else to do those actions. My thesis is if the resume for a job isn’t worth the effort of ensuring it is of a high standard, the person isn’t likely to achieve quality standards day-to-day.

No, it is absolutely not discriminatory to reject candidates who can’t demonstrate they can do the job.

I hope that explains my viewpoint.

I agree with you. I have a number of staff with Asperger Syndrome, or with mild dyslexia, and we have a regime of peer review in place that helps deliver the quality we need to provide our customers. This review is for anything the customer sees in a document, any software we write before it is tested after unit test, any changes to production-level systems.

This process is not optional and applies to everyone, even me. It does help those with the types of disabilities we are discussing, but I’ve noticed over the years that these people take extra time to get things right, being diligent, and they end up performing as well as anyone else, albeit that was an unplanned benefit.

Lowering standards is not the way to remove barriers.

OMG, I imagine when you repeat this in correct German and French language without a spelling checker in front of an audience of 200 well educated and graduated professionals. To easy it a little bit you're allowed to think they all are naked. :-)
