Currently Sky shareholders are proposing to use Sky funds to buy Vodafone in a deal that leaves Vodafone with 51% of the merged company.

It may be more palatable to Sky shareholders to have their shares bought outright - cash in hand etc.

It'd have to be a hostile bid - and a significant premium to the VOD/SKY transaction. Not even Spark is that stupid.

That would probably be a daft idea. Against it would loss of business - which would see the company losing all telephony business with many customer - and the powers available to the Commerce Commission.

They are a monopoly for certain pay TV products and channels but they don't have a monopoly on all pay TV. They are not the only purchaser (monopsony) of pay TV channels. Other suppliers purchase some of those channels and you can pay for TV through them. That's why you can get Rialto outside of Sky TV.

I'll take annual leave to keep up with that thread.

Can't see it but I would wager there will be differetiations. One will get cake icing and cream, the other will get cake. Or maybe the $50 deal will be standard for Voda users? The rest of us 63% will just get fan pass and grumble.

IMO they wouldn't ever be allowed to buy it, as it took years for the Commerce Commission to get 3 mobile companies in NZ. Going back to two, it will be impossible to prove that consumers will be better off.

But I really do wonder what benefit there is for Sky buying VF. Basically they become like Spark, an ISP with an addon service (pay TV). Why don't they buy a far cheaper ISP if they were going down that track. eg Like Orcon when that was for sale.

I guess if one thinks of the new entity being a media company, then the convergence makes sense. I think it basically increases the subscriber base and may slightly raise vodafones ARPU at a guess, although I think that they will still need to consider that peoples average monthly spend is divided among more entities now.

A single bill would be good, although I still receive two from VF each month for internet and phone, so it wouldnt be surprising if I ended up receiving three.

I notice that sky uk already offers this type of convergence (my sky, broadband and phone) and I suspect they will probably (if not already) offer 4k. Hopefully the new entity will continue to use the mysky decoder technology and keep it inline with the uk.

If Voda had a national network I would get it, but they don't . Sky makes good money Voda loses money. B

I dunno. Sky makes an income, Voda doesn't.. I think sky can be the stability. But how will Voda leverage Sky at the detriment of non Voda users?. It could be F it I'll just use Fanpass and bypass both of them
