Favourite winter holiday would be Japan, where we discovered the brilliance of heat packs. It kept us warm no matter how we were dressed. No wonder we saw people in shirts and skirts when it was barely above zero degrees!

We usually try to get some skiing done up at Ruapehu every year with the girls. Now they are older and becoming their own person everything is a rush rush... "can we go yet?" But there was a time a few years back when building a perfect igloo was both their idea and the only important thing (maybe Club Penguin had something to do with it?)
Favorite winter holiday I can remember was traveling eastern Europe back in 2011/2012 a different experience to my summer holidays over there.
A winter blast came down from Siberia and froze most of Europe and got to experience things like frozen rivers, watching people ice skating on frozen dams, not being able to see the outside exhibits at the Belgrade air force museum as they were buried under meters of snow.
At that time it had been the coldest I had experienced that I know of with the daily high in Belgrade ending up at -9.
Here is a photo from Budapest where it was slightly warmer (-6), this was not part of my travel plans at the time but due to issues in Bulgaria due to the weather I went this way and had a few days reset which involved the Natural hot pools in the evenings, truly recommended in this weather.
I would recommend taking Jandals next time as it was very cold on the feet moving between the outdoor and indoor facilities.
Getting back to Bristol in the UK felt like arriving in the tropics.

A couple of winters back we decided to take a cycle trip around the "big coast" east of Wellington.
Surprisingly it was a weekend of gale force Northerlies, daunting at departure time.
We left from Upper Hutt and had a free ride down to Eastbourne. I figured we would pay the price once we got around the other side, Turakirae Head or thereabouts.
But no. As luck would have it, the Northerly turns Northwest on that side and blows off the hills out to sea, leaving a shadow for us to ride up to our day's end at Lake Onoke.
Still finished the day in the dark. If it was as windy as we had feared we might still be out there.
Next day, returning through the Remutaka Incline, it was a similar story. Yes, gales. No, not the raging headwinds we planned on.
For the middle of winter it turned out to be a much more pleasant two days than the weather maps suggested.

Nah, best for me the ones to Raro, Fiji (just back), Palm Cove, Townsville (smoke from sugar cane fires aside!) and the likes in July - Aug. Out, damn cold!
