richms: So we really have to make the small uninspiring pie a success in the hope of getting the good ones in the future.

I suspect it's an exercise by McDs  to  run with the brand before they lose it, have only one pie  which will fail due to lack of  choice then they will say "Told you so " and  put Georgie Pie back in the box for another 10 years and will prevent anyone else from accessing the brand name.

tdgeek: I'm late to this thread

They were tasty and fresh, and very small. Worth it at 50c and $1. Cost more now, but $4-50??

And, will they be Georgie Pie's or a Macca's new pie labelled GP?

You forget that most of the time the pies cost $2.00 to $2.60.  It was only in their last year that they were $1 and usually smaller so a large pie at $4  today  would seem reasonable..

In Chch I assume it came here last, and not for too long as they were $1 then

When you think about it...$1.00 and $2.00 pies in the late eighties and early nineties will equate to $4.50 pies now.

It's only because we have all these nostalgic feelings and memories that we "expect" $2.00 pies...which in this day and age is uneconomic.

I do agree, but I just had to ride to the store for lunch in a rush. plastic wrapped Mince and cheese pie, was good, and a small/medium american hotdog for $5-40. A $4-50 teeny Georgie Pie isn't value. If it was a proper sized pie, maybe if its good.

Reminds me when Maccas came to town. Until I saw one. You notice that when you get a real burger

Some key things seem to have been missed from what we can take from the press release.

"McDonald’s New Zealand today announced that after 15 years, it will be launching a pilot to bring back the Kiwi legend, Georgie Pie"

So it is a pilot and they are trying out the brand. It is not about a new mince and cheese pie product launch.

“We’re committed to delivering to the original recipe and treating the Georgie Pie brand with the respect it deserves”

Again it seems about trying the brand on the back of a tried and true recipe. “The Steak Mince ‘N’ Cheese pie will be made using quality New Zealand beef and Georgie Pie’s unique short pastry, formed in the distinctive square shape. The only significant alteration to the original Steak Mince ‘N’ Cheese recipe was the removal of added MSG.”

“Bringing back a product after 15 years and at scale is a highly complex process and Mr Wilson says the pilot will help test the product operationally across McDonald’s range of restaurant types, while providing valuable consumer and business insights”

So I guess they are trying to figure out if they can make pies in their business model. If it can be produced at the right cost and sold at the right price it might be a goer. If they can do a mince pie they can probably do a fruit pie.

“The Steak Mince ‘N’ Cheese Georgie pie will be priced at $4.50 for the single pie.” So the Steak pie might be $4.00 and an apple pie $5.00. But they want to try the Mince and Cheese at that price point within its fast food manner first.

I’ve never had a Georgie Pie but for $4.50 I’ll give this one a shot.

Inflation hasn't doubled since the late 90's when it closed. Back in the 90's you could buy 6 pies from the supermarket in a pack for about $5. They are still around that price now. Also the Big Mac in the mid 90's was about $4. It  isn't $8 now. I think it is around $5. I would chopse a big mac over a pie anyday, as it is far more filling.

A Big Mac is filling????  Any Maccas burgers leave me felling full-ish, but hungry after an hour and a half. Always been like that. Novelty food, nothing actually in it

More filling though than an old $1 georgie pie, was what I meant, and price wise they aren't much different. The big mac is the only thing I like at mcd's and haven't had one for a few years.

Yep - they still have bulk packs of budget pies at the supermarket, 1/2 dozen for the same price as a very teensy can of gourmet pet food.  One is guaranteed free from hydatids, the other I wouldn't feed to a dog.

It certainly makes you wonder, although they do have to have to meet certain standards and meat contents. You would hope that NZ food standards are good enough. I don't eat pies these days myself, unless they are home made ones.

lol.

according to the Aus/NZ food standards, a 'meat' pie must contain at least 25% of meat flesh.  (it was updated recently to include the word flesh alongside the word meat....)

Noticed today the McDonalds in Te Awa (Hamilton) were advertising the Chicken & Vegetable pie as being available, same price. Nothing noted on their website so either they are keeping it quiet or have jumped the gun.

Using your logic then a dozen beer should cost around $60 a dozen.

A new toyota corolla would be around 80k.

i get what you mean but I don't think inflation applies evenly across the board.
