Christchurch triple fatal: Dead teens' link to high-profile murder-suicide
So...two kids (of three that were involved in fatal crash) were related to a guy that went on a murderous rampage before they were born...
How is any of it relevant?

And more to the point, it rubs salt in the wound of the family.
Just another sensationalist clickbait regurgitation. There really need to be some standards imposed on irresponsible media reporting here. Articles like this serve no useful purpose.

Couldn't agree more.
It's completely irrelevant, not to mention disrespectful to the family - despite their dodgy past and the kids' multiple indiscretions...the family just lost two kids in a car crash...don't print nonsense clickbait articles that simply add to their pain.

This is not unique to New Zealand. It's a thing that cable/tv news ambulance chasing type stuff started doing and then traditional 'print' media eventually followed to compete.
Personally I don't want to see media restrictions. I'd prefer outlet voluntary ethics codes. That removes some of the competitive aspects of this kind of 'news'. This was effectively the case a long time back when major outlets didn't bother with this stuff and only the tabloids sometimes did it.
What type of person hits up a family who just lost their kid, inside of 24 hours? Then expects to get them to make sense.
A non-news item of stunning inconsequentiality. If RNZ can't find anything better than this, they shouldn't bother trying. They are going downhill faster than an avalanche in the Alps.

Unfortunately that does seem to be the case. I saw one on there a couple of days ago with the attention-grabbing line "Burger King forced to change ad". Meanwhile the article itself says that BK voluntarily changed the ad upon hearing that someone had complained.

I'll see that RNZ gem and raise you this one they currently have on their home page:
'World's cutest dog' dies from 'heartbreak'
Buried in this article is the following statement: "You risk hefty fines, a loss of 50 demerit points or driver disqualification."
Woulda thought losing 50 demerit points counts as a good thing!
