There was a story yesterday claiming that the richest person in NZ had got richer by the same amount as the poorest 50% had got poorer.

Now, that might be the case. I make no comment on that. What is not the case, but it's implied, is that the richest somehow took their gain from the poorest like a swap.

They probably did.

While I understand how you can determine the ‘richest’ by looking at capital wealth, how do you determine who are the poorest?
Is it those who owe more than they own?
Or those who have nothing but the clothes on their back?
Or is it those who rely on the state to survive?

The subject report is from Oxfam I believe, and as such has political motivations ahead of Davos.

As is often pointed out in the political forums, look at the source of the information and the motivation behind it. If the percentage of poorest was 45 or 70, would it make any difference?

Yesterday Newshub published an article about the new proposed Cook Strait ferries in which they stated that the existing fleet are 30 years old. Do they not do any basic fact checking?

I wonder if that was just a slight error in how the information was presented, by the time new ferries are delivered in the mid '20s, the existing ferries will be about 30 years old. Kaitaki was built in 1995. 25-30 years seems to be the expected lifespan of a ship.

In fairness to Stuff, the photo is captioned "The jet when it was owned by Iberia." and its registration was indeed once EC-EZS

Aircraft registration, at least in NZ, is a bit looser than (say) car registration, in that the owner can change the registration pretty much at will (subject to paying the fee each time, and applying the new letters).

It's reasonably common for someone to register an aircraft with their initials, for example. One of the conditions of the sale of such an aircraft could be that the new owner change its registration, so that the old owner can use the same letters on his next aircraft.

If an aircraft is sold to an owner in a different country, then it has to be re-registered in that country, and would get different letters. If it was then sold back to the original country, it would again be re-registered, and almost certainly get different letters again. But that doesn't seem to apply in this case.
