My comment was a request for clarification. I asked because I don't understand the issue, having not experienced it myself. From the tone of your response, I would not say it has nothing to do with impatience. Maybe that and a touch of driver arrogance.

It causes a concertina effect.  One person lifts slightly, the one following lifts more, the one following that has to tap the brakes, the next one needs to brake harder.  Within about 20 cars, the traffic more or less comes to an abrupt halt.  When those cars pass the spot, there is nothing to see.

One slow car merging can cause a traffic jam for a couple of kilometres before the ramp.

I usually shift a lane over if I can see an impending imperfect merge, then move back once all is well again.  Obviously only works when the traffic is light.

Ticketek:

Tickets = $40.00

"Handling Fee": $3.90

"Service Fee": $5.25

"Payment Processing Fee": $1.32

Total: $50.47

So I have paid $10.47 to print my own tickets at home.

Using my power, printer, ink and paper.

Needs a Govt enquiry.

Really infuriating - particularly when there's usually no alternative purchasing method. So wrong.

Right up there with credit card fees on air travel "per leg, per person".  I'm only making the one payment transaction, not one per person, per leg.

I took a careful look at the traffic videos this morning and I get that this happens, but I still don't understand why it happens. If the traffic flow is 100 km/h and someone enters doing 70, that causes everyone to slow down in a ripple effect. That makes sense. But why does it result in people coming to a stop? Why does the ripple keep increasing? I would think the flow would just continue at 70 km/h. What is the math at work here?

Not math, but people.

Drivers don't uniformly slow down - they wait until they're close, then slam on their brakes, causing the one behind them to do the same, but more abruptly and the concertina effect results in a standstill a few hundred metres behind them.

If everyone slowed to exactly 70, there wouldn’t be a problem. But the first person slows to 68, second from 68 to 65, third from 65 to 61, etc.

And it’s ‘maths’, not ‘math’. After all, it’s ‘mathematics’, not ‘mathematic’ (in this context).

There are logical arguments for both spellings. The word “mathematics” can be considered as a singular and as a plural noun. Both the Oxford and the Merriam-Webster dictionaries say the word is plural – hence the s on the end – but also that it is usually used as if it was a singular noun. So, most people would say “mathematics is my best subject” and not “mathematics are my best subject”. The shortened form “maths”, then, makes sense because the word is still a plural noun and so should still have the “s” on the end. On the other hand, it could be argued, “math” makes sense because it seems wrong to remove the letters “ematic” from the middle of the word and leave the final “s”.

There are a number of other plural nouns that are used as if they were singular – for example economics, ethics, politics, gymnastics, measles and dominoes. These words, however, are not habitually shortened, making math/maths rather an unusual word.

It’s sometimes surprising how much argument and disagreement small differences such as that single letter can make. Readers in the UK, for example, sometimes get very upset if someone writes “math” rather than “maths”. No doubt the reverse is true in the US. In practice, it’s simply worth being aware of the geographical differences so that you can use the correct form of the word in your writing.

If one is lazy about grammar and spelling, one is likely to be lazy in general.
