would you buy jam in a thick heavy glass bottle (costing 25% more than the competition) with an aluminium pop top and no labelling telling you what it is, what the ingredients are, or when it expires?

I would if I could take it to the jam counter where all that information is prominently displayed and have it refilled minus the one-time cost of the bottle.

Cos lobbying and money. And my freedoms.

Nothing to do with that, it's because containers that are specifically designed for it work but anything else doesn't. Prime example: Milk bottles, wide open neck, thick heavy glass, easily-removed disposable cap, no labels stuck to it, and no corners or rims to catch on anything, the whole thing is totally designed to be washable and reusable. Everything else isn't because it wouldn't work in the market - would you buy jam in a thick heavy glass bottle (costing 25% more than the competition) with an aluminium pop top and no labelling telling you what it is, what the ingredients are, or when it expires?

Jam expires?

Someone probably needs to explain that to my homemade jam cupboard contents then.  Varying fruits and a span of up to two years worth at any given time.

Oh, yeah, things that annoy me: People who want to turn the simplest thing into a conspiracy.

I wasn't suggesting the lizerartti came out of their volcano for a special meeting but as you've heard from Fred99, there was a concerted BS campaign to extol the virtues of the plastic milk bottle/tetrapack.

Re my comment about freedoms - we could regulate liquid drinks and the containers they can be sold in but we're so obsessed with letting commerce do what they want. So what if you had to buy coke or jam in a thick heavy bottle/jar? You just put it in the back of the SUV and drive over some extra bird nests or picnicking hippies on the way home.

Milk from bottles is totally available.

This place has a coin/cash machine, milk bottle and milk dispensary all in one small shed: Home | Arran Farm

I was going to launch into a great big rant about high-priced boutique product made for morally smug eco-warriors, but the price is on their website, and it's actually about the same as what you pay at the supermarket for any "branded" milk in a plastic bottle.

What a day to be alive - well if luck can prevail over incredible stupidity:

A rescue helicopter is being dispatched to look for a pair of kayakers off Wellington’s south coast, which is being hammered by southerly swells from a polar blast.

Police were alerted to a pair of kayakers, one of whom was possibly in distress, off Marine Parade in Seatoun just before 8am. Police were at the scene and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter being sent to carry out a search.

Surely in that case there's an alternative rant about how the milk drinkers of NZ are being shafted by big farma?

The fact that NZ Couriers have 800 different gratuitously incompatible tracking number types and no way to tell which is which, so you have to type bits and pieces of each one into all of the different fields in the hope that one of them yields a useful track.

Sheesh, it's a number providing an index into a database, how hard can it be to have one single number for all your packages?  Or if you really need multiple different-format numbers, have the first digit select which format it is and your web site can route it to the correct tracking mechanism rather than forcing the user to guess which one of the multiple ones it belongs to.

MadEngineer: Log a fault with Vodafone for phones not ringing with some incoming calls

Vodafone’s responce: “The phones didn’t ring at this time”

this gets better: voda email me an update of “no updates” with only their new reference number and no mention of what fault the update is for which is of no use when I have dozens of open cases with them.

The woman that just parked on the footpath outside my house and then walked up my driveway to get to the back neighbours' place, despite their driveway being right next to it.

Today I passive-aggressively put the rubbish bin out (a day early), which blocked the access and prevented anyone from parking there. She pulled the car up, got out, moved the bin, and then proceeded to illegally park again.

Alas, I'm far too shy to confront her.

After she's gone, take the bin and place it behind her car.

Take an assertiveness training course, next time she does it confront her - whilst praying to god she hasn't done the same course.

Does your council have parking wardens?

Yes, although I've never seen them outside the CBD.

I started writing an email to the council when I made my earlier post, but decided to put it on hold until I was less annoyed; the last thing they'd want is a rant!

Edit: I feel I should point out my reasons, so that I'm not just whinging for the sake of whinging. With all the rain recently, the ground's soft and I now have two clear tyre tracks leading to her parking spot. There is also plenty of room to legally park on the road, and there is no time restriction.
