So after some recommendations in this thread for newsroom I followed that news site for a while. Initially I found it quite good but eventually gave up on it as it is very stale  and coverage is very thin. Looking at it today, most of the stories are days or weeks old and several current events have zero coverage.

I've settled on radionz.co.nz now. It's pretty good. The news has decent coverage and is current and the commenty bits aren't idiotic at all.

freitasm:

The Newsroom seems more like a news source than the Spinoff.

Just saw this. I bet if Newsroom had an app for iPhone and Android their readership would be a lot more. As it is, they're limiting themselves by only having a website - people these days (well, me, anyway) want their news on the go.

[Adjusts onion] You know, not everything needs an single-purpose app. A mobile web site that a) doesn't nag me to download an app and b) waste half the screen with a video I don't want to watch that won't scroll away and a menu that pops down as well every time I scroll is just fine. Massive negative bonus points for SIGN UP TO OUR NEWSLETTER boxes that popover, too.

It seems the Herald is going to use the Washington Post platform for the pay wall.

So you'll get unlimited page views if you use incognito browsing? smile

I barely read it, so doesn't bother me.

It seems a lot of the articles are heavily biased and opinion pieces.

Wonder if they'll accept cash payments? I've got a few old one cent coins at home. smile

SaltyNZ: For sure. But an app might help with their readership numbers, if done properly.

I think the paywall is a great idea. The media's attempt to rely solely on advertising revenue seems to be going exceptionally badly, so an alternative source of revenue should be good (even if it means hardcore readers have to pay)

Too late for the paywall... it probably would have worked 5 years ago, but the Herald's quality has slid so far that now no-one in their right mind would pay to read it.

I have pretty much given up reading the NZ Herald - despite many of their articles being a lot better than Stuff.

The fact they still have an unusable mobile site that takes 20+ seconds to load on a mobile device is simply remarkable.
