TVNZ chairman admits in letter to Broadcasting Minister 'thorough reference checks were not undertaken' in Kamahl Santamaria hire

For those who give a fig...

TVNZ's acting chairman admitted in a private letter to Broadcasting Minister Kris Faafoi that "recruitment policy was not followed" in the hiring of disgraced Breakfast host Kamahl Santamaria and "thorough reference checks were not undertaken".

...

But in a letter on May 31 obtained via Official Information, TVNZ acting chair Kevin Molloy openly admits to Faafoi that proper hiring processes were not followed - and Faafoi acknowledges this.

"I can confirm that TVNZ has a recruitment policy, and a Code of Conduct which sets out the Company's expectation of all its people," Malloy writes to Faafoi.

"The recruitment policy was not followed in that thorough reference checks were not undertaken, although the Head of News & Current Affairs had worked with the candidate previously.

"It is the view of TVNZ that the policy needs further reviewing and strengthening, and an independent review of the process undertaken. To that end, we have engaged independent employment lawyer Margaret Robins to undertake a review of relevant TVNZ policies, processes and practices to ensure they remain fit for purpose and appropriately robust."

Just as I suspected, cronyism all the way. How long until the head of news departs? I think his head will be the next to roll.

If only the government would privatise TVNZ then this circus wouldn't have been the taxpayer's problem.

Journeyman:

The good news is that your taxpayers dollars didn't pay for this at all as TVNZ is not publicly funded 🙂

That may well change after the merger.

Looking back on this, I don't think this is entirely correct - apparently it's 90% ad revenues and 10% government funding.

It depends what your source for that is and what that 10% government funding actually is. Some TVNZ programmes are funded by Te Māngai Pāho and NZ On Air. That is contestable programme funding. More importantly, Breakfast is funded by neither of those bodies - it is financed by TVNZ's advertising revenue. So Kamahl Santamaria doesn't cost the public anything.

This is from TVNZ's Annual Report 2021:

Funding from NZOA and TMP $6,228,000. Revenue: $339,957,000.

1.83% of TVNZ's revenue.

Where is the remainder of this govt funding from?

The information I quoted was from Wikipedia, past that I don't know.

Wikipedia doesn't offer any accurate sources for that. I recall Ian Fraser saying in 2005 that TVNZ got 10% of its revenue from the govt. That was during the charter days - which was abolished in 2011. So I'd say that quote is 11 years out of date.

Santamaria published an 'apology' today apparently because the BBC is about to publish an article with new allegations

I saw that, given what's already come to light, I don't know how much worse it can get for this guy. Only possible thing I can think of is it's a lot more women than reported previously - which is certainly what this sounds like.

Update on this: looks like he's been trying to "hawk his wares" to the NBR.

Like I said at the start of the thread, I think he needs to find a totally different line of work and move into that instead. Media/journalism is going to be a dead duck for him for a long, long time - too many people will have a negative opinion of him by now to work in that area, at least for a while.

Eva888: emasculate
/ɪˈmaskjʊleɪt/
gerund or present participle: emasculating
1.
deprive (a man) of his male role or identity.

Rather than choosing words out of context to dissect, it’s always appreciated when readers try to understand the entire essence of a discussion. Unfortunately interpretations often vary considerably from the writer's intentions. For anyone that wondered, the use of emasculate referred to natural masculine instinct being curbed.

Here’s some added context. Having a couple of daughters who have broken through the glass ceiling and listening to the ways they have dealt with persistent 'creeps' brought some entertaining and hilarious stories I’d better not share suffice to say that the creeps had a lot of explaining to do to their girlfriends rather than to their bosses. Much worse in my opinion and I’m sure they soon felt very emasculated.

I like the pragmatic way they handle such matters and their ability to differentiate between a creep and someone who is genuine and how to let someone down sympathetically and gently without sharing the experience on any media. I particularly like that they have climbed the ranks using their ample abilities and never pulled the gender card. That’s because they believe they are equal and I take some credit for instilling this.

Women now have so many protections in employment law that they don’t need to be hiding in bathrooms or feeling they are victims. Certainly a lot more protections than when I was navigating life in a world full of men in charge.

So back to the topic of the OP's subject. In the interests of fairness I hope he has the chance to tell his side of the story because so far it’s been missing and there’s been a lot of media conclusions that may or may not be correct.

Looks like you're going to get your wish. Well, sort of.
