Lizard1977: The Expendables 2 - 8/10

I finally got round to seeing the second Expendables film last night. I can confidently say that this is one of the dumbest films I've ever seen, with some gaping holes of logic and continuity, and ridiculous stunts and action. I can also say with equal confidence that this was one of the the most fun films I've seen in recent memory. All the major action heroes are here, happy to send themselves up, in a generous homage to the ludicrous action films of the 80s.

Stallone, Statham, Lundgren, Willis, Schwarzenegger, Norris, Van Damme - all terrific. Some extremely cheesy one-liners and not just winks and nods, but full head-shakes to the audience as they riff on the signature lines from all the classics. Arnie "is back", Willis "yippee ki-yay"s, and Norris gives a great turn halfway through the film acknowledging the legendary Chuck Norris "facts."

No Oscars here, but lots of violent action and fun to be had.

Totally saw this last week and completely forgot to post a review.

While I still enjoyed this one I felt it didn't live up to the greatness of the first one. Enough action but the cheesy one liners are what made the first one great and while there were a couple of goodies in there they were few and far between. Overall 6.5/10

Watched Kiwi Flyer with family today. Only the three of us in the cinema (well, 1:30pm session to be fair). Quite enjoyable, amateurish at times, but funny. I give it 8/10.

Took the kids to see Hotel Transylvania on the weekend.
Funny, good voice cast, not as rich in detial as a Pixar flick, but well worth a look if you have kids. The trailer on TV represents the movie well, and doesn't give away all the best gags.
Its not at all scary for a movie filled with famous monsters. Plot is fairly thin, but plenty of humour and sight gags to make up for it.
If you're iffy about Adam Sandler, don't worry you won't recognise him, his voice, or his usual comedy style.
If you're an animation geek, its directed by Gendy Tartakovsy of Samurai Jack fame.

Aliens - 9/10

Re-watched Aliens on Saturday night - the 1986 theatrical release, on Blu Ray. I've only seen Aliens a couple of times, and it was a long time since I last watched it, so it felt fresh and new. It's a terrific story, and ups the ante on Alien nicely. I was impressed with how well the special effects stood the test of time.

I saw Looper in the weekend.

8/10 - A seriously solid sci-film with enough sociological depth that it's not just flying motorbikes and time travellers.

There were major plot points totally undeveloped in the trailer which made them exciting and interesting in the film because I had no idea they were coming.

There are a few questions which arise but that's not unexpected given that it's a time travel movie after all.

I'll likely watch it again to try and iron out all my questions but the director did a Q+A on /Film which cleared up a lot of them.

Just watched Dredd last night. For me it was an excellent movie. Hardly any slow points while they established the characters. Lots of action. I give it a 9/10 because it wasn't a long movie, it left me wanting more. Some movies get a little too long and your thinking hurry up and get to the end, unless it is a really good movie. Anyway, big thumbs up from me for Dredd.

Dark City

I saw this mentioned on the Dredd thread and had watched it before that a few weeks previously. First half slow moving and not much happening establishing the noir. Second half picked up an acceptable pace mostly. I took it for a cheap claustrophobic matrix knockoff but learned from the Dredd thread it was made long long before matrix. After watching almost felt like I might watch it again but not quite. There is a directors cut, which is not the one I have, so I might give it a second chance on the directors cut if I see that around.

Not a fan of the first one. The second is far more interesting and has a larger story but still grim watching and the solution such as it is - is too simple.

Total Recall 2070 (YouTube link may be NSFW)

TV series all episodes on YouTube link above. More like Total Runner - the story revolves around androids and the atmosphere and staging is all Blade Runner including the street scenes. The producers have a policy of starting each episode with a soft porn scene between the exact same two characters. Dialog moves along like a steam train trying to get out of a station and never leaves. Made it as far as episode 4 while doing other things. Good luck!

I watched Dredd the other night, I would rate it higher if I hadn't watched The Raid. Felt like the director watched the latter and decided to copy some of it's ideas. Fun to watch nonetheless and I hope that there will be a sequel that explores more of Dredd and perhaps introduce Chopper(don't know if anyone spotted it but there was a Chopper tag in one of the scenes).

i saw Cat Run on sky and would give it 7/10, Wasn't expecting much but it was one of the more entertaining action films i have seen lately. It just shows you dont need an enormous budget and big stars to make a good movie. Funny and violent, usually at the same time , and the woman assassin is the coolest baddie i have seen in a long time, think Mary Poppins on steriods.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Looper - found it enjoyable and didn't leave me with too many 'how, why, if' questions that some time travel movies do.

I agree that the trailer is good in the way it doesn't give away all the plot points which for me made the movie even more enjoyable.

Although some parts made me think that yep saw that coming or that I'd seen it before but over the years I've gotten good at seeing where plot going - flatemate always teases that I must have written the scripts for some of the movies lol

Having a good cast also helps and one of the actors - a young boy, is definitely one to watch out for in the future.

The Avengers - not bad, 8/10 for the fun.

Kiwi Flyer - funny in some bits, kind of amateur acting, but 7.5/10 for the whole thing.
