Took the Mrs to see Madagascar 3, we both love those animated movies. Good movie, its long but you don't notice it being long. Quite funny movie and was better than I thought it would be with it being the 3rd in the series. 7/10

Resident Evil: Retribution (3D) - 5/10
Though I've never played the games, I've seen all the Resident Evil films. Last year, they played the first one on TV, and I found myself strangely enjoying it, in a strictly b-movie sense. The wife and I rented the other films in the series, and they weren't too bad. Definitely not ground-breaking or revolutionary, but a fun way to kill 90 mins (each).

The latest film, which picks up the story immediately after the previous film, Afterlife, suffers from an inconsistency of pace. One minute it's cracking along with some fun action, the next it's dragging it's heels. While none of the movies can claim to be clever, this is probably the least clever of them all, and suggests that perhaps 5 films is a step too far.

Talking with my wife about the film afterwards, I summed it up like this: "Expendables 2 was dumb fun, with the emphasis on 'fun.' Retribution was dumb fun, with the emphasis on 'dumb.'" She agreed.

Just finished watching the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (and sequels) trilogy that's been screening on Maori TV for the last 3 Saturday nights, the Swedish versions with subtitles.
Thoroughly enjoyed it and plot mostly true to the books, although a little simplified. Pretty gritty stuff.
Haven't seen the American version yet, but will certainly do so for comparison.

New Zealanders, on average, have one testicle.

Funny and clever movie on Maori TV at 9:30 tonight; The Valet.

It's a bit of a chick-flick but I do recommend it.

I watched two movies yesterday I will tell of one only which was

Killer Joe with Matthew McOnaughey

Well what can one say about this movie. I started as a lot of others would by reading the blurb on IMDB which gave it a decent rating and the storyline that sounded like it could have had potential. Not overly original guy wants to kill someone to collect the insurance. Still though we thought we would try it out.

What happened next is just hard to describe. I consider myself one quite open to a lot of things in film. I like gore (this movies got it), a bit of nudity (this movies got it) a little bit weird in places (this movies got it) but there's a certain scene towards the end which will have you thinking you may never look at (no spoiler here) again in just the same way and possibly just never be able to see that certain thing again without feeling just a little disturbed. I know all three of us felt that way afterwards. I am sure that now a whole lot of people will read this and I will have sparked some interest.

This movie is not for the faint of heart and I give this as a warning from someone who laughs at movies like Saw and Hostel. I know some will watch it and think I'm exageratting and others will watch and think they should have heeded this warning. Watch at your own risk (and possibly your stomachs) then let others know what you think as my opinion is just that mine.

Oh yeah the movie finishes with a interesting twist that will leave you wondering.

Last movie I watched (with kid) was Rio

Quite funny and easily watchable; but then I am a big animated fan

Only thing I can mark it down for (and this applies to a lot of animated "kids" movies) that the humour is more geared towards adults. But the kid enjoyed it too so it can't be all bad

Dredd - 8/10
I quite enjoyed Dredd. I vaguely remember watching Sly mumble his way through Judge Dredd in the 90s, and it wasn't all that great. But Karl Urban does a really good job here. I'm not particularly knowledgeable about the source material, but I do know that Dredd never removes his helmet, so it was a challenge for Urban to "act" without showing his face. He did a pretty good job IMO. Storyline was a bit ho-hum, but it felt like the writers were trying to establish the basics for a potential franchise, rather than trying to be everything to everyone. In that sense, it was a good movie.

Looper - 9.5/10
This is a strong contender for the best movie I've seen all year. And considering some of the films released in 2012, that's a big statement. I'd seen the trailers many times, and I was looking forward to the film, but I was pleasantly surprised that the trailer didn't tell the whole story. Instead of a big action film with slices of sci-fi slotted in here and there, it was a calm and patient film with the sci-fi aspects woven throughout the story. JGL does a great job as the young Joe, and while he seems to spend the first part of the film mimicing Bruce Willis (the older Joe), after a while it just becomes normal and natural. And the mimicing isn't really a fair description - he manages to nail the nuances of Willis' expressions, tone, and demeanour. There's a scene between Joe and Abe, his boss, where you can just picture Bruce Willis sitting in the chair and reacting exactly the same way as JGL is. The supporting cast do a good job too, but the stars (JGL and BW) shine here, and put in excellent peformances. I don't think I can say anymore without giving away potential spoliers so I'll just sum up by saying that it's a great film, and one I'd be happy to watch again.

Yeah a pretty good laugh that one. Nothing mind blowing but quite a few all-out laughs for me.

Shame that Galifianakis and Ferrell didn't get much screen time together. They're both great comedy personalities and it'd have been good to see them bounce off each other the way it worked in Anchorman or Step Brothers.
