Handsomedan:

So the saga with my mates at Aramex continues.

Several weeks on, several emails, several phone calls, many promises that my wife's new bike would be delivered urgently and there's still no sign of it.

.

.

.

I'm convinced they've lost it.

I half-heard an item on the radio just now saying that Aramex has won some sort of award for 'best courier company' or something similar.

Doesn't say much for the rest of them.

WOW!

Their customer service is virtually non-existent and online message boards are full of similar complaints to mine from both senders and receivers.

Just awful.

I think at least some of those 'awards' are created by the organisations that receive them and don't actually mean anything.

Just spoke to the bike shop and they're lodging a claim for a lost item.

He kindly offered up the information that this is not an isolated incident and there's about $35k worth of missing bikes right now that haven't been delivered.

Unfortunately, they have to wait for the courier company to acknowledge that the item is lost, before a refund can be processed...so I am still $850 out of pocket for the foreseeable future.

The looming prospect of actually having to be at work instead of working from home.

https://www.aramex.co.nz/why-aramex/our-awards/ lists 9 awards 2007-2018. Most are "Franchise(e) of the year". Customer service and quality are conspicuously absent.

That would be on account of the fact that they have none.

Update for me: Bike shop has to get Aramex to admit theyv'e lost the bike before they can formally lodge a claim, they then have to wait 2-5 working days for the claim to be processed before they can offer me a refund.

So another week or two will go by without a bike or cash. All just a bit frustrating.

I'm not going to shop with EVO cycles again (despite having spent thousands with them over the years) and I certainly won't knowingly give Aramex my business either.

Non-synchronised or poorly synchronised traffic lights.

That's one thing I miss from European cities, they sychronise the traffic lights on major thoroughfares and show a speed on displays at the side of the road that you keep at in order to ensure green lights all the way out, it's know as the green wave or local language equivalents.

Fred99:

Problem with Consumer (I have a subscription) is that almost none of the models I was looking at in stores were reviewed - the reviews seemed to be for superseded models.

Yeah, some of that is deliberate by manufacturers to make it impossible to do A/B comparisons, Braun/Oral-B electric toothbrushes being an extreme example of this with dozens of identical models given different model numbers across different countries or retailers. However Consumer also do general brand-reliability surveys which are a decent indicator of how a particular brand will perform. One thing I've noticed in the past is that for most types of whiteware you'd think no-one but Germany knew how to make washing machines, dishwashers, etc that are reliable, it's a clean sweep of Miele, Bosch, and others in the top positions. Mind you, at those prices...

How is the shop getting refund from Aramex your problem? I'd be getting very grumpy with the bike shop, you probably already have I guess.

Not a J.D.Power award is it? Those are awards that you don't exactly buy but which you get to use in exchange for lots of money changing hands. Like a PAC in US politics, you're not directly buying the politician but...

I assume there are lots of similar awards that you can get on similar terms.

Yeah I am pretty salty about the whole thing. I understand it's COVID and all that, but how is it my problem that they are out of pocket.

The guy on the phone from EVO said that they are dealing with over $35k of lost bikes at the moment with Aramex.

At what point does it become theft where either you or the shop should be filing a report with the Police?

If the shop has many thousands of dollars worth of kit going missing, then surely they'd be changing courier pretty smartly?  If they aren't concerned by this, that raises more red flags to me.

Years ago I lived in Brisbane's Eastern Suburbs. The main thoroughfare into town, Old Cleaned Road, had 17 sets of lights in a 7km stretch of road. it was absolutely painful if you caught the lights out of sequence.

Then a few years passed and they upgraded all of the bus stops to the new digital signs that told you when the next bus was due. They added transponders to the busses and as they passed each bus stop they could tell if that bus was running on schedule or not and resequenced the lights to get the bus back on track. It wasn't widely publicised but I had a friend in the council. From that point I just sat behind a bus everyone morning and cruised into work.

Quite normal stuff these days but this was back in the late 1990s.

/Start rant.

GoPro....

Decided to update my decidedly aged GoPro Hero 3 with the new Hero 10 just released. Looked around for any deals and decided that ordering direct through GoPro themselves with the subscription and accessory bundle was the best deal. Went to place the order and see the bundle is out of stock in the Asia pacific region. Decided to just order the base camera plus subscription on its own anyway.  I could then use my subscription to get heavily discounted accessories from the GoPro store to match the bundle for much the same price. Place my order then fill my shopping cart with the accessories I wanted. Can't proceed as they can't ship standalone batteries to NZ. Aarghhh!!

Now I realise this is out of their control as these silly rules are set by the airlines but its still frustrating. Especially when they allow you to add batteries to the cart and only inform you they can't ship them when you go to checkout. Decide to sleep on it overnight.

Get up this morning and low and behold, the bundle is no longer on out of stock. I call GoPro and ask if my order can be changed to the bundle, computer says no, my order has already been sent to the fulfilment centre. Ask if I pay the difference could they ship me the accessories in a different shipment, computer says no, can't ship a battery without a camera. Ask if I can cancel my order and place a new order for the bundle, computer says no.

The solution they offered me? Place a new order for the bundle and when my standalone camera arrives arrange for it to be returned under their 30 day return policy for a refund. I'd have to pay shipping back to Singapore obviously.

End rant/

The irritating habit that NZ journalists have if referring to people by their surname only and omitting Mr, Mrs, Ms, etc so that their work reads like a school end of term report.

"Smith said that...."
"It was hoped that Smith would recover"

Etc.

It's also poor manners, but I don't suppose many of the journalists grew up being taught that was important.
