From RNZ: 'Thirteen people were killed when a burning Russian passenger made an emergency landing at a Moscow airport, Russia's news agency Tass said.'

Maybe they shouldn't have served that passenger so much alcohol.

Headline in Auckland Mag:  New fish species discovered that can detect wavelengths.

-- no wonder some people distrust science

Fish: I guess I will go swim in that wave. It looks longer.

Apart from the semantic issues around detecting a measurement...

FWIW, detecting wavelength is probably quite difficult for a fish, or anything in the water for that matter. It needs to know it's own velocity in the direction of the wave, and then measure the period of the wave. I'm going to say that measuring the period isn't difficult, so long as you're deep enough not to be moved about by the wave itself, and have some suitable pressure sensors. But knowing your velocity in an environment where everything is moving in 2 and maybe 3 dimensions isn't easy. Also the typical environment is the summation of many waves of different directions, amplitudes, and periods.

So kudos to this fish.

Although a funny headline, the fish detects different light wavelengths. Science still correct.

Exactly right. Yes, its funny,  I watch a lot of doco's, and what some parts of our animal kingdom can do is outstanding. More than once I feel that with all our technology we cannot match this. The brain, is an amazing device, not just ours

Saw it reposted rather than myself specifically, but apparently, there was an article about a give a little page set up for a terminally ill woman with 3 kids dying of prostate cancer.

As do probably all fish.  The headline is like "Stunning Finding:  Scientists show that things fall towards the centre of the earth when unsupported!" OK, except helium and hot-air balloons.

Caption for photo...

Strong gusts had already brought leaves down in Auckland on Sunday and were set to worsen in the evening.

Gusts so strong that they brought down leaves! Someone call out the national guard!

News Hub poll:  How do you feel about the future of our economy.

Two options:  Pessimistic, and Pessimistic.

Methinks the poll is biased.

Big front page headline in our local paper this morning about a microwaved pumpkin that exploded.

Well d'oh.

RNZ:

A dog in northern Thailand has rescued a newborn baby after it was buried alive, allegedly by its teenage mother.

The baby boy is said to have been abandoned by his mother, 15, to hide her pregnancy from her parents.

Ping Pong the dog was barking and digging in a field in Ban Nong Kham village. Its owner says he then noticed a baby's leg sticking out of the earth.

There is a photo of a dog, with the caption "File photo. Not Ping pong." So why include it?!
