I just got a new work laptop, an HP Elitebook 830 G7. It seems that the fans are permanently on high speed and it closely resembles a 777. It's incredibly annoying.

They tend to configure things like that for "performance" mode, which means run everything as fast as possible and damn the fan noise. You can switch to power-optimised modes that seem to give you 99.9% of the performance without running fans at max all the time, but it can take an awful lot of tweaking, particularly in Win10 where they've made most of the options unavailable or non-functional so you have to do obscure registry tweaks, through to having to run a command shell under the SYSTEM account to make the necessary changes.

Nope. It makes zero difference. Accessing the registry is also out - it's a locked down corporate build.

Intel and Windows suck with this stuff.

Buying a new couch, having it delivered and finding that the base material (underneath, where you put the legs) is ripped.

So frustrating.

HTTPS certificate expired a year ago. At the time I got an assurance from IT that they'd set up a reminder and this wouldn't happen again.

Guess what happened today.

Calling PBTech

Their phone menu starts with a welcome message then tells you their operating hours as if you’ve called outside their normal times

Then you get their menus. Total time is 40 seconds+ just for that.

… then they don’t answer

You're not on Atlantis anymore, Duncan Idaho.

They probably changed their ticketing system in the interim, losing all their reminders

What, it doesn't tell you that they're experiencing higher than normal call volumes? Don't they know the drill.

The thing to be annoyed about isn't the IT people, it's the idiots who decided that certificates had to come with a built-in denial-of-service attack where they'd take out your infrastructure every twelve months. "Real nice web site youse got dere, be a shame iff'n it was to go offline because you didn't keep up wid your protection money payments...".

The maximum validity period for publicly issued certificates is now 13 months.

Slingshot provisioning.  I've had interaction with them three times (on initial connection, on speed change and on request to remove the homeline part of my service) and every time they have messed up so that my UFB service has been disconnected.  On the latest occasion, they tried to blame this on the receiving VOIP provider and only later admitted that there was never a request to transfer the UFB service.  So the family and I had a fun day on Friday doing work and school from home using cellphone connections.

I'm currently torn between "three strikes and you're out" and giving them one last chance so that I can take advantage of their frontline worker discount.  But if you're looking for a reliable ISP, my advice is to look elsewhere

Nah, it's the same one, although the powers that be want to replace it for reasons unknown.

But it gets worse! The ticket was closed with "here's how to set up an exception". I reopened it with "Great. Now can we actually fix the problem please?"

That there is no collective noun in the English language for nieces and nephews. Something like niephews. We have siblings. Why not their cousins? English is so lame.

Someone has coined 'nibling' but I can't see it taking off.
