Hi,

I have the Saturday Herald delivered and every so often someone is pinching it out of my letterbox. As I live down a long right of way, about a hundred metres from the letterbox, I don't think it's possible to use a standard wireless security camera, to catch the thief, and to be honest I can't be bothered buying one and setting it up

So my idea is to buy an android cellphone, as I need a smartphone anyway, hide it in an adjacent hedge and stream the footage, using telecoms 3g network, to a web streaming site, like justin.tv. so I, or my partner can check it via the intrnet. To keep costs, and bandwidth down when uploading the footage I obviously need the footage to be low quality, black and white and slow like a frame a second. Is it possible to do this? Will a wireless broadband connection be fast enough? Can you adjust a cellphone to shoot slow, low quality, black and white footage?

BTW I'm sure I know who it is and I have no intention of going to the police  so all I need is an image that is clear enough to identify the person to me.

BTW this is a great forum a lot of times when I google about a problem this forum often provides the best NZcentric info.

Thanks for any help on this matter

Wouldn't it be easier to just hide a video camera in the bushes and review the footage afterwards?

Yes, it would however I don't have one and I don't want to buy one. It was mainly because I am on the market for a smartphone I came up the idea, My hope is to catch the thief in the act as I'm usually at home on the computer when it happens,

A truck load more than one of those small battery powered cameras that you can just put an SD card in and grab the footage off later.

As for the mobile question, same answer, just record video to the phones SD card and grab it off line.  The BB data costs will set you back more than just tipping the paper boy to bring it to your door (which is the option I'd choose if you really really really want to get your news on a tree!)

You could leave the phone camera recording until it fills your memory card . . .

This conversation will get real funny when you ask about a method to find out who stole your newspaper, and your new smartphone...

pffft.... I'm behind the times... I'm not the one asking about new technology, that could be used to read the 'news', to catch someone stealing the media that same said news is printed on.

The degree of stupid in this whole issue is so great I just thought it would be fun to offer up some creative comments on options....

...but seriously, just cancel the subscription and spend the savings on a nicer smart phone to just read the content on line for nothing more than the cost of the BB data.

...and save a tree along the way!

He won;t be able to do that cause I've got a patent on "Ä method of stealing a phone and newspaper" it only applies to android phones though thats why I'm not buying an iphone

Given it is easy to work out what time the paper is delivered and the time the paper is likely to be stolen and you are home at the time - is it not just a whole lot easier to hide in the bushes working on your laptop until the thief arrives to provide the required live entertainment?Laughing

The only way I can see the letterbox, without being observed from my property is by peering over an eight foot ffence or peeking around he corner of the fence. I tried that and lasted about five minutes. It is a tedious task.
