I have been having trouble with NZ post not delivering parcels for some time, and was wondering if anyone else has been having trouble, or have suggestions on how to get them to actually deliver parcels properly.

For the past year, instead of delivering parcels, they often instead put a card in my mailbox to say that I have to pick it up at a postshop in the next suburb the next day, either because the card says noone is home, or in todays case, the item is too large for the letter box. I actually have a box that is very large, and is private and off the road,  where milk bottles used to go, and that could accommodate the parcel easily. It is as large as a bikes parcel rack. I also litrally live across from a NZ Postshop but the item is never taken to that post shop, but instead one in the next suburb with is a good 10k round trip away.
In the case of  noone being home, there was someone home, but the postie never came through the gate to knock on the door. I do have video surveillance on my property and did check this. They needed to deliver the item  to a person, because it was signature required parcel. When I complianed to NZ post, I was told by NZ post that they won't come onto the property if they can't leave their bike in a safe place on the road, which I am guessing is almost never. Although in my case there are heaps of places it could have been left safely, and they have come in in the past. It is only recently where they have decided not to come onto the property.

I was told by NZ post that the item is usually taken to the post shop that is at the end of the posites run, hence mine must be in the next suburb. The thing is I have a PO box too, which mail  sent to my address is supposed to be redirected to anyway, so I shouldn't be getting mail to my address, and the card the postie left even said that I may want to consider getting a PO Box !
The other thing is that NZ post do operate a courier service, so I would expect that if their posties are not able to deliver parcels, or they require signatures and don't have the time to actually get this, that they should be giving them to the couriers to deliver. I thought NZ post had a contract with the sender, and a responsibility to actually deliver mail to the address of the recipient. NZ post are the only company that I have ever had problems with delivering things, or maybe I have jst got a bad or slack postie, or maybe their policies have changed recently.

Has anyone come across this problem lately, or know how to get them to actually deliver the items properly. I have lived at this property for the last 10 years, and only within this last year have I had this problem with parcels not being delivered by NZ post.

Yep, same here in terms of the package being 'too big to deliver'.

We have a box that has a normal slot on the front but the mail is accessed from the back by a large flap.

I am sure that items aren't even given to the postie and the cards are delivered to speed up deliveries/lessen the load on them

NZ Post rarely delivers packages to my house, I don't think they even try. I suspect they just leave it at the post office and have a card filled out already. You can't really blame them, they're on a bike and can't carry that much, but a card saying "no-one was home" is often just not accurate.

I get things from ebay and hong kong occasionally, they're all signature required, I've never had one actually delivered, 100% end up with a card to collect.

I've onlyhad this happen once with NZ Post/Courier Post but have had mulitple problems in the same vein with NZ Couriers, DHL, and another one I can't recall.

In one case I was in the back yard which was visible from where the courier parked. I could see him, he could see me but he left a card.

Yep happens all the time for me with items from China/HK, worse is that they return the items (or keep them ...conspiracy) at the postal depot rather than post shop. And they always tick 'other' as the reason, which is rather unhelpful

In my case there are 4 post shops that are closer than their depot!

We have the same sort mail box and have been given a bunch of excuses as some things would definitely fit "its not secure", "they can't go down the driveway".   I now suspect your explanation is more likely!

I didn't realise it would be such a common problem. It only seems to be a new tproblem for me, as they did used to deliver them fine, so I presume they have changed their policies, possibly with all the cheap stuff coming from china on standard post. Maybe NZ post aren't being paid to deliver them or something?

I can understand posties having trouble with parcels, but surely they should be giving them to their couriers, if posties are unable to deliver the items due to their resources. I don't really know why Posties should be delivering parcels anyway on bikes due to the space they take up, and that service is a courier one instead. Or they need to work out another way of delivering mail if they have more an more parcels. I guess things won't change unless people complain to NZ Post, but my complaint to them had no effect, as they had all the answers already.

only plus side to his is that the post shop is a 5min walk which is good for exercise

I occasionally get a non-delivery card for purchases from ebay, usually because "nobody is home" and it needed signature for registered mail (more likely, they didn't want to wait long enough for me to hear them knock, put down what I was doing, and make my way to the front door).

I wouldn't mind so much, except that I can't pick the item up from the closest post shop which would be very convenient, it's always at the area sorting centre, which is only open until 1pm, monday to friday, and is at least half an hour out of my day.

It's not even "on the way" to anywhere for me, so if the item is a $1 or $2 thing then the fuel I spend on a special trip to get to the sorting centre and back effectively doubles the cost.

we a little different - urban address with rural postie, but when we had this problem we talk to him about it, and he said it basically came down to this, for normal post ie not a courier paid, but got stamps, if he can not delivery it at the end of the drive way, then he has to put a card in the mailbox and move on - even tho this take him longer to do this then coming to the door, if he did come to the door he would be fired due to person posting it did not pay for door delivery. To over come this we got a big rubbish bin and painted For Large Mail on it and left by the mail box, and now days he put any large stuff in there and move it to the other side of the mailbox so we know there something in it.

I'm pleased you raised this.

Funnily enough I actually wrote a long letter on 10/January/13 to Mr. Brian Roche,
Chief Executive,
NZ Post Limited,
Level 12,
New Zealand Post House,
7 Waterloo Quay,
Wellington, 6011 ,
New Zealand.

I haven't as yet had a reply although of course the carrier pigeon may have become lost Frown .

The incident which prompted me to write was that I received a card saying that no-one was home to sign for a parcel when in fact I had been home all day having checked the box on the way in and on the way out.

When I collected the item I asked the staff member why the postie would suggest that no-one was home when this was untrue - I was told that posties now never leave the road due to safety concerns. (in my case the drive is completely visible to others and short).

I was quite annoyed and more so by the fact that the card suggested that perhaps I should get a P O Box - in fact I already have a business box and pay for 6day delivery - I also raised in my letter that the local Post Office decided to not deliver to Business Boxes on the normal business day 31/12/12 .

I also commented on recent slow mail delivery with a business letter from Westpac taking 2 weeks to reach my P O Box recently and other items several days across Auckland.

I have asked Mr Roche why I should actually bother paying for a PO Box when delivery is not rapid and when the overall service currently is poor. If everyone who has PO Boxes and a physical address cancelled their Boxes presumably there would be greater cost for NZ Post delivering items.

Anyway I have included Mr Roche's address above as others may also wish to write to him.

I wouldn't mind so much if they actually delivered to my local post shop too which is less than 5 minutes away.    Although it takes an additional day, as the post office doesn't ever get the item until a day after the card is delivered, which is quite annoying.
But in my case they are delivering to to one miles away, and they won't transfer it to my local post office, as they say once it is in the system, they can't interfer with it. I guess it is a problem that will only get worse with more parcels being sent, and maybe the problem with NZ post will eventually make mainstream media.

This is incredibly common. Unfortunately it is due to the pay scheme NZPost employs which is based upon the number of parcels delivered rather than a rate per parcel.

Good idea, if I don't receive a sensible response I might just send my letter and the response to a NZ Herald Columnist I know - she might be quite keen to comment in the media as she tends to raise these sort of issues.

Perhaps NZ Post think we should all run to the letterbox when the postie blows a whistle like they used to do 50 years ago Smile  .

Given that package delivery is very much the future of physical mail, you'd think they might want to do something about this problem :/

I can't say I've had the problem with ParcelPost but I have had the issue with couriered items where the driver drives up, jumps out of the van and puts a pre-prepared card to call in the letter box and drives off without attempting to ring the doorbell. Where our house is I can see the street easily and I see him do it all the time.

I now call up Courier Post and complain whenever I see it. First time I was called back and told that the driver is adamant that they knocked and no one was home but my wife was home all morning and in the room right next to the front door!

So, my advice, when you get a card to call and you were home, call up and complain!
