what is every ones opinion on being forced to vote for a sex/race/sexual orientation/religion in you live in a certain electrate?

Have they truly lost their marbles this time, or do they believe the public is so stupid to not see a dictatorship coming?

I for one can't see how discriminating against a person based on the above traits can ever be legal?

referring to the article below

I have an initial opinion on this but will do some more reading first needless to say it will promote a lot of discussion methinks.

Just re-read the Stuff article and this is slightly different to what was presented on the news last night.

"a dictatorship coming" ???? that is a quantum leap and a stunning over reaction from an attempt to improve the mix of candidates from the current bunch of clones.

My understanding of the discussion proposal is for the list candidates not electorate.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I think anything that is a type of ' quota' system is wrong and you may not get the best candidate and maybe its mre about appearing to do things than actually doing them.

I get the desired outcome which in itself isn't bad, but I have always maintained that it should be the "best person for the job" no matter what colour or sex or whatever. Each person should stand on their merits, beyond that I don't care what they look like or if they wear a dress or pants.

It will be an interesting discussion. Ultimately however isn't this discrimination which is illegal?

The current system for any party does not get the best candidates, maybe something new may improve the performance levels and heaven forbid professionalism from the hill.

Running the risk of being censured here...isn't that also the Maori roll - discrimination against anyone who is not?

I have always been of the opinion that those voted into office should be based on merit and the sheer number of voters behind them - irrespective of sex, ideology, sexuality or race.

Maybe I'm in the minority - but I'm also not Labour's target market.

LOL on this article. Labour never had any marbles to begin with.

Female dictators are very uncommon (cant think of a single one right now), so its probably best you vote for the labour nutters if you worried about NZ becoming a dictatorship.

The Maori electorates were established as affirmative action to address an imbalance especially prior universal suffrage. Once all outstanding treaty issues have been addressed these could and probably will be disestablished as originally planed in 1867.

If you believe that your in La La land.  The Maori treaty gravy train will roll on  forever.   The Labor party discrimination against male candidates I would have assumed would be against employment law where you can't discriminate on gender.  I assume that these female candidates will be brown skin only as well??

Labour's traditional support base in the hardened West Coast miner who is working hard to support his family on a low wage. The problem with Labour becoming too politically correct is that they are alienating that traditional support base and trying to compete with the Greens for the extreme liberal vote which strategically is never going to get them back up in the polls.

Alasta,

True as I think this is the fight to get back what the Greens have taken of them, so that if they do get back into power in coalition with the Greens they have the upper hand.

Traditionally what happens to change who is in power is that a portion of the electorate gets bored with the incumbents and votes the other lot in. Labour knows this so are trying to get control over the Greens for when this happens and to appease those who might swing as they might trust Labour and electrorate MP's more than the Greens and their party list MP's.

hmmm. Affirmative action was only invented 100years later (1961 in the States to be exact). I had no idea that NZ was so far ahead of the rest of the world.

The benefit of AA is to represent an underrepresented group" in areas of employment, education, and business. It provides improved access to university courses and scholarships for Maori. Its actually got nothing to so with "outstanding treaty issues" as you put it. Those "treaty issues" will never be addressed because they keep increasing.

Affirmative Action does not work. One only has to look at what has happened in South Africa to see the proof.
