12/13, got fracking wrong (I'd heard the word but it's not really something I'd followed ... but of course I'm going "duh" now!)

The quiz brings to mind the statement - think how dum the average person is, then realize that half of the people out there are dumber than that.

I can not believe that test is aimed at adults.  For the most part, it's pretty simple stuff I would expect a 12 year old to answer...

I bought my Dad the game "are you smarter than a 9 year old" (or something like that) a while ago. He played a 9 year old, and lost.

lxsw20: 12/13 Got electrons are smaller than atoms wrong.

Atoms are made of protons, neutrons, and electrons, according to my memory high school physics. Don't ask me what those things are made of. Magic, I think.

I thought it was oil, but gas was the closest option.

The two I got wrong

- I thought Carbon dioxide made up most of the Earth's atmosphere. Really did not realize it was Nitrogen.
- "Nails rusting" a chemical reaction?

Nitrogen is inert, for us. CO2 would be a problem, global warming.

Rust = iron plus oxygen.

I was surprised to see only 20% of people got the question right: "Which gas makes up most of the Earth's Atmosphere?"

Kind of underwhelming. Although it does require some easily obtainable scientific knowledge, it has significant issues like multichoice answers with only two choices. My brother who has little scientific knowledge would probably get close to 13 out of 13 (edit: which I got) because he's very good at assessing multichoice answers.

It's interesting that women score higher than men on the two questions about pharmaceutical drugs. In general, scores increase with more education, scores decrease with age suggesting that there is better education now or that seniors are less in-touch with current issues and concerns such as 'fracking'.

100%, but I am a chemical engineer so would be disappointed if I got any of those questions wrong. If it was a test on spelling and grammar it would be a completely different result.
