So sadly Fleetwood Mac have (understandably) cancelled their forthcoming concerts, tickets to which I had bought at some expense via Trade Me as a present for my wife who loves the band.

I don't suppose I will be able to get even the face value refund as I am not the original purchaser of the tickets.

However, it says online in Stuff etc that the original cards used to buy tickets will be automatically refunded.

Does this mean that the original buyer can flog his tickets online for a profit and then recover his original Ticketek payment on top as a bonus?!

Interesting question this

The first thing I would explore if I was you, was the seller breaching the ticket and Trademe's T&C?

If he was, then I would go after him for a refund and even contact Trademe for some help.

Normally I would agree - except I was the third 'owner' of the tickets because the person who sold them to me had bought them from someone else on TM but then could not go!

I think I will at least tell Ticketek in the hope the original buyer does not get a free refund from them!

This happened to me once and I got a refund from the seller (although I paid below face value). I would think you could get a full refund (maybe excluding fees? since it's not the sellers fault they cancelled and he won't be getting back his transaction fees probably, on either transaction) but if the seller wants to be a problem, he might hold back. Even if you had to go to disputes tribunal you'd at least get face value back from him surely?

I do not believe you'll have any luck with Ticketmaster.

You think you've got it bad? I had two sets of front row centre tickets that are now useless! :(

I doubt I would get much joy: there's no legal requirement on the part of a Trade Me seller to refund I can think of unless the tickets were fakes. As you say, the cancellation is nothing to do with him and in any case he bought them in turn from someone else on TM.

Since many tickets were sold on TM, it seems to me that Ticketmaster are about to 'automatically refund' a bunch of people who already profited from selling their tickets!

Demand a refund of your money from the seller.

Did you pay via credit card? ANd how long ago was the transaction? You could always try and stop it via your bank?

Trademe is miles behind ebay, why tademe has not implemented some sort of buyer protection system with paypal is beyond me.
What is the trademe ref for this sale? If he does not refund you I would like to block this guy because I have also bought tickets off trademe in the past

Ticketmaster have confirmed that only the original purchaser will be refunded so it seems that their company policy is to effectively reward ticket scalpers in these circumstances!

This kind of discussion just goes to show how broken the ticketing system is.

E.G. I bought presales to NIN/QOTSA last week. I can't actually get a copy of those tickets until I pick them up at the venue on the night.

I emailed Ticketek and checked why that is, as it's in a different city that I'm unfamiliar with so no matter what happens I'll be stressed out for the entire trip until I get to the ticket booth and have them in my hands. They told me it's because they don't want presales being on-sold on Trade Me.

It sucks really, the only way around it that I can see is if Trade Me and the ticketers team up and ban ticket sales on Trade Me. Leading on from that the ticket vendor needs to have a 2nd hand service where the original owner can have their ticket bought back and on-sold to a new buyer - if the original owner can't attend or whatever.

It's a difficult situation though, there's really no right answer.

No - there is a right answer: no refunds unless you return the physical tickets and only to the person in possession of said tickets.

Or you make the tickets automatically invalid unless the credit card used to buy them is presented at the venue on the day.

As usual, NZ business is run to suit the business not the customers!

Are you kidding me? If this were the case (as it is for the NIN/QOTSA gig mentioned) you wouldn't have had the chance to buy your wife the tickets she so desperately wanted. I guess this would be a solution, since you wouldn't be in the situation you now find yourself. I'm sure the ticket situation is no different in your beloved homeland.

In my opinion, the problem is only exasperated by people who insist on paying inflated prices for tickets in the secondhand market. Have you even contacted the person you bought the tickets off to see if they'll help sort it out? I wouldn't trust that they are necessarily in the same situation as you. It's a nice excuse to say "the reason I am selling these tickets for more than face value is because I had to buy them at more than face value from someone else and now I can't go and I'm just trying to recover my costs" but it doesn't make it true.

Regardless of whether or not that seller purchased from someone else I think they need to refund you the money. The sold you tickets to an event that is no longer taking place. It's their responsibility to get their own money back from further up the chain (however many links that might be).

No, not kidding. They do that with cinema tickets in many countries - you order online and inset the payment card in a machine in the cinema foyer whereupon it prints your tickets. No reason why it would not work for other tickets and it would stop scalping stone dead.
