OK so in any community there will be those who have _different_ opinions about things.

What I find dishearting is that the school which you would have thought would informed educated place rolled over rather than saying there is no evidence for what you say so we wont do it.

Saw this on slashdot - so it is spreading.

They turned it off in the junior school - which probably has a few devices per classroom if that, so probably not a major issue.

Sounds like the board did something minor to make them go away.

It also sounds like Ministry of Ed, Ministry of Health has existing guidelines in place - which the board got advice on and were found to be following.

In short - two idiots who have collected "experts" and "evidence" that support their viewpoint and ignored anything to the contrary are getting attention when they should be told to go get a less embarrassing hobby.

Also same on you whoever chose the headline on the article. BLATANT exaggeration and sensationalism.

This stuff has been happening since wifi came out - hell my old work but it in one of the first schools in NZ to get it - we had the tinfoil hat parents complaining but the board told them nicely where to go.

There is no point arguing science (non ionising/ionising), or other sources of higher energy (but still not damaging) radiation such as cell sites. Unfortunately I don't think there are significant studies on the effects of wifi on health - possibly because it is such a non issue. It is like trying to argue with people who don't vaccinate (who are doing so despite comprehensive scientific proof and usually based on an autism scare that has been thoroughly disproved).

Ugh is all I can say. Embarrassing this has NZ attached to it in any way.

Just two points

1) Schools are often run and staffed by people who have no clue about most technology. My brother was the go to person at his school at age 7 (he was no genius), the teachers would have him call the IT company because they didn't understand anything about anything.

2) If it's something the majority of parents want, and it will have no negative impact (I can only see benefits with having only wired connections in a classroom), the school doesn't have a lot of choice but to do it. Topics like this get people scared, and scared people make others scared. If the school did nothing, parents would likely move their kids.

Internet access causes all this in the first place. Some wacko posts something that looks convincing and people blindly believe it. Somehow, the rule "everything on the internet is a hoax until proven otherwise (nothing can prove itself to be legitimate)" seems to have been made and forgotten in just a few short years.

In everything there is a risk, it is how that risk is mitigated that is important.

I see people that spend long periods of time on cellphones, that is risky.

I have no issue with cellphones being banned at schools.

No good reason to have one at school.

Before and after - no issue of you want to give your kids a phone, but if someone wants to get hold of a child at school - call the office.

School boards are designed to have a fairly large degree of autonomy and I would encourage you all (whether you've got kids or not) to join as many as you can.

Boards have a governance role - that is, they don't run the school but they hire and direct the managers of the school (Principal, senior leadership team, etc depending on the size of the school) and have a role as advisors and exemplars of the community they represent.

It's vitally important schools are supported when parents come up with nonsense like this. We are all well placed to do that - we can explain the science and why wifi is no more dangerous to our kids than baby monitors.

If the board directs the principal to remove all wifi, or indeed all computers and internet access, there's not much the principal or the Ministry can do to change that. It's up to the school as to how it delivers on the curriculum needs.

Join a board and help fend off this kind of thing.

But according to the quotes, the BoT didn't remove WiFi because they it thought there was a health problem - they removed it because the parents wanted them to. Who thought there is a health problem. Except for parents of the senior school kids, who didn't think there was a problem. Did this convoluted mess really happen?

Beware the NBR who has suddenly moved Te Horo into the Manawatu.
