You can say that about lots of things are tax is wasted on

local government waste is what gets me even more. Kiwis are just too blasé to give a hoot and just roll over and take it

And that's why we're all screwed, live it up while you still can, this is the last century in which we will have enough resources remaining to live as we do.

People waste money on useless idols such as the Prince and Princess of who cares instead of trying to solve real problems.

Is anyone else sickened by the whole circus? I just find it so ridiculous.

I would mind a lot less if they were celebrities and not only because they would be paying for their own holiday.

The sad reality is they are here as representatives of New Zealand's head of state The Queen and therefore hosted at the expense of the state. The constitutional arrangements I find far less objectionable than this horrible charade. Ban it.

Good luck! Your best bet is for NZ to become a republic.

Why taxpayer need to pay BMW 7 series for prime minister and ministers? Why can't they use a simple Toyota Camry?

Why a tax payer funded dinner is not being held at somewhere more public?

Why can't a millionaire head of state spent his or her own money for a private dinner?

I care very little about the financial side of it. Also they get a lot of stuff free or vastly reduced for publicity/advertising purposes. The part that bothers me is a bunch of stuff and serious issues being reduced to the simplicity of a 1940's newsreel just because some prince made some comment on it well meaning or not.

Their publicity could very well get tourists going to Queenstown for wine & jetboats, yachting on Auckland harbour etc

Just from a publicity stand point: here in US the royal tour has put NZ in the news more than anything else lately, even more than Mr. Dotcom has.

The attire of the Powhiri participants, Will getting in the plane, Kate's sip of wine putting a lid on pregnancy rumours (those stories on Kate's sip in particular must be gold for the NZ wine industry as there were serious puff pieces)...

There is basically a new line each day and in each one NZ is mentioned; short of a major disaster few other events would get such multi-day coverage.  There has to be a decent value to the country in having it's name out there.

This publicity is short lived. Everyone will forget about it once they left the country.

It is not a holiday, it is official Government business just like any other official business it is funded out of Government funds. Bottom line NZ will probably make more than it spends with this.

It's not a holiday, it's work for them - their job seems to be to make nice with the colonies. Unsure why NZ pays for it though, though technically they may be the representative of the head of state so it's diplomatic.

Would you really want Obama driven around in a Camary if he came to visit? That would be embarrassing for New Zealand.

Because you should see the deal they got on the BMW's -- they are basically free.

I suppose you could take your argument further and say they should be riding bicycles.

Minister perks are not set by ministers themselves.

Blame the people who gives them pay rises.

I suppose the same argument applies for why a board would pay a ceo tens of millions ... is that so the board can give themselves a pay rise

Private dinner means there is no press or entourage, but it is still a working dinner between our Prime Minister and future Head of State. It should be paid for buy the Government. My wife has at least 2 lunches, 1 breakfast and 1 dinner per week which are working meals, these are paid by the organisation she works for are you saying these should come out of our funds?
