And it seems to be going really well ... check out all the bids on these soon-to-close auctions!

SO.  MANY. BIDS.

I wonder exactly how they got people to put 34 pages of front page auctions on there.

I'll offer 10x their income (ex ads)  from the site for the past year for the domain name.... think $100 should cover it - cant be bothered working out the change I'd be owed....

Guess that's the advantage of LED shock resistant - normal bulb would blow on er... the first blow.

They relaunched quite a while ago, but appear to now have new branding. They need to find a niche, that other auctions aren't offering. They have done heaps of TV advertising. Not a place I would spend time listing things, becuase if people aren't there to view the auctions it is a waste of time for sellers. I only use trademe to sell things, as they have the buyers. Sure, their rates are probably more, but at least they have buyers on it.

Do they double dip your pocket like TM - i.e. charge to list AND charge to sell?

We use some TM owned channels for selling our accommodation and charging like wounded bulls is a speciality, but at least only for actual bookings rather than merely listing.

I just don't see the business case for Wheedle.  What is going to make buyers and sellers swap away from the incumbent?

The tried and true excuse comes up that Kiwi's are sick of paying high transaction fees.  Well it doesn't seem like we are - just ask Zillion and Sella.

The thing that is missing is Ebay style buyer protection.

Introduce that and you may have something. At least until TM are forced to do it as well!

TM do actually offer this though, it's called SafeTrader.

edit: I realise it's not quite the same as ebay buyer protection, but that is probably not economical on such a relatively small scale.

The safe trader website doesn't look lme it has been updated since the 90's  based on it's design. I think they have also removed the link to it from the top navigation bar, so suspect it isn't used much.

Maybe if weedle setup an eBay protection system, and say they are the cheapest way to trade online, they would have a point of difference. It may mean that trademe may bring in such a system, bringing in competition to the market. Some regulation in this market also may be useful, to help bring in buyer protection. It appears quite a few people do get ripped off by sellers.
