We got home about 9.10PM last nite and wife says "Come and look at this"    Saw coming  from the Rotorua direction over Pyes Pa  a  bright orange  light traveling  toward the kaimis.  Just as it was   about to vanish there was another and then a third from the same direction.   Each one stayed visible for about 3 minutes.  Thought  that they may have been Chines lanterns but as these were traveling at aircraft speed and there was no wind I ruled them out.   There  was no noise from these items.

The wife did a Google search and found a similar incidence at the end of 2012 in the same area.

Anyone else see this??

Local area 51??

Regards,

It actually could be lanterns because of Blessie's Walk last night.

Edit: But even that was quite far away from Tauranga... maybe some people close by wanted to release lanterns as well?

John Reader had his helicopter painted bright fluro orange, more badass that way.

Could have been lanterns.

You believe they were moving at aircraft speed, but that's only true if they were as far away as you believe. They may have been much closer, and therefore traveling much slower.

The simplest answer is usually correct.

This might explain something we saw just on dark last night about 4 nm north of Hamilton airport. Something with a red glow wizzed past our left wingtip at about 1000 ft AGL. ATC weren't aware of anything at that location and we came to the conclusion it was a balloon of some sort with a light inside.

It certainly got our attention.
