I am after some software to look at the files my car camera has created.

I have seen two programs suggested

www.dashcamviewer.com

and

www.registratorviewer.com

Both look interesting, One is trialware with 15 uses the second is donationware.

The thing is, the second option has a russian author and for no logical reason, I find myself procrastinating about downloading it for no other reason. Too many tales of MP3.ru ?? Russian malware hackers etc.

After thinking about it, I think I would have a similar reluctance for some software from china too.

So am I a closet software racist/nationalist ?

A.

PS I know the logical thing is to google the software name looking for bad user experiences, which is what I will do.....

In my experience Eastern Bloc Developers are very good programmers and logical thinkers. I would consider it a benefit not a downside if the product was developed there.

I'd be more concerned that if you didn't download it, and tried find an EUropean option they might invade you

In all seriousness, Russia and the eastern block is the home of dash cam video, so it would be reasonable to assume that Russian dash cam software is fine and works well

My original post is very tongue in cheek... I was surprised at myself for even thinking about it...

Read the documentation before you buy. Bad documentation is a sign things may not be great.

Are there any dashcams with wifi upload available yet? Would be nice to have the thing empty out everytime I park up somewhere with wifi access.

What is the need for a dashboard camera, anyway?

I would've thought with the amount of dash cam videos uploaded to youtube from Russia (Everyone in Russia seems to have one!!) they would make the best software for dash cams.

I understand the logic in your thinking - about all you can do is to do a bit of google searching on the products to see if there are any reports of malware etc - so I agree with you on that approrach.

Of course many products appear to come from a 'known' company/location but you often find the development is done in Russia, India,China etc by third party contractors - whether you realise it or not. So you cant really tell a lot of the time where the developers are actually based.

I guess evil programmers could be anywhere.
