See here

A nice attempt at speculative invoicing!

This scattergun approach of these "legal" firms that set themselves up just in the business of trying to extort money from alleged pirates is pretty much akin to the Ransomware guys encrypting your PC and demanding $$.

Pretty sure If I got such a letter I would reply "GFYS"  obviously I would write that out in full, in quite large font.

As many commenters on the story said "Dear A Hole - prove it was me."

Good Ole Murica, willing to try anything.

Excellent suggestion, I think some sort of combination

Dear A Hole,
Prove it was me.

Yours Sincerely

Telling them to GFYS might change it from scattergun to sniper.  They might then become a serious PITA - and if you did send that letter, then it might not be a good look if they front up with it in court.

Just because the Americans think they own the world doesn't mean they do.

If you end up in court you defend yourself, protest your innocence, and ask them what they mean by default Wi-Fi password  You could also mention that that you want reimbursed the $7 in costs for having to hire the movie so you could research it before the case. (and how no amount of money could ever make up for the 2 hours you lost watching such garbage).

You really want to go through that?  That letter isn't "speculative invoicing" - the worst of it seems to be a demand that you must respond  - "or else".
Almost certainly a lousy scam which begs placement in file 13, but any response to the scamsters is not a good idea IMO.

Oh - and America might not own the world, but as we see in NZ with IP law - present and proposed - exert a lot of influence and receive an incredible level of cooperation from our authorities.

I would either not respond, or reply (via my lawyer) with an indignant letter - denying the allegation, asking for evidence, requesting that any proceedings be initiated in a local court, and requiring that all further correspondence on the issue be directed to my lawyer rather than me. Their whole model is based on issuing a speculative invoice with people rolling over and paying rather than agruing, and I doubt they would take it much further if given a hint that you might be perfectly prepared to fight it out.

I doubt you would hear from them again. Plus, requiring it to be done through a lawyer should protect you from any rotten tricks like them procedurally arranging things to get a default judgement against you because you didn't know that you had to turn up in the Ekatahuna district court at 6.15am to defend yourself.
