Do we not have an environmental thread here? Maybe we should have.

This IPCC report makes interesting reading. Apparently those who keep chirping that we are a small country and can make no meaningful difference to the planet by imposing environmental controls on ourselves, are simply wrong. We have a big impact after all, in spite of our small size.

Since NZ's only contributing scientist (according to the linked article - which isn't the IPCC report by the way) says the report is politically charged, it could go in the politics thread? By the way, that scientist is a political scientist so obviously eminently qualified to produce a paper on climate.

I can't comment on your comment as I am neither a climate scientist nor a political one, but it does strike me how quick people are to find reasons to dismiss anything that suggests they might actually have to make changes to their lifestyle to protect the future. I suppose we can all sit around and keep thinking of excuses not to do anything until the sky falls.

Professor Mark Howden is Director of the Climate Change Institute at the Australian National University. He is also an Honorary Professor at Melbourne University, a Vice Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and a member of the Australian National Climate Science Advisory Committee. He was on the US Federal Advisory Committee for the 3rd National Climate Assessment and contributes to several major national and international science and policy advisory bodies.

Mark has worked on climate variability, climate change, innovation and adoption issues for over 30 years in partnership with many industry, community and policy groups via both research and science-policy roles. Issues he has addressed include agriculture and food security, the natural resource base, ecosystems and biodiversity, energy, water and urban systems. Mark has over 420 publications of different types. He helped develop both the national and international greenhouse gas inventories that are a fundamental part of the Paris Agreement and has assessed sustainable ways to reduce emissions. He has been a major contributor to the IPCC since 1991, with roles in the Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth and now Sixth Assessment Reports, sharing the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with other IPCC participants and Al Gore.

Bronwyn is Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science and International Relations and Director of The Sustainable Citizenship and Civic Imagination Research group. Her research focuses on the intersection of sustainable development, youth politics and democracy.
Bronwyn is a lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Special Report on 1.5 and an Expert Advisor for IPCC AR6 and SR 1.5. She is co-primary investigator with University of Surrey's ESRC funded CUSP: Centre for Understanding Sustainable Prosperity, she leads the CYCLES Children and Youth in Cities lifestyle Evaluation study in 7 global cities.
She was an Erskine funded visiting Fellow with University College, Oxford, UK 2017. Recent books are Sea Change: Climate politics and New Zealand (BWB, 2017) and Children, Citizenship and Environment (Routledge, 2012).
She is a member of the International Social Sciences Council steering committee - Transformative Research and co-researcher with University of Oslo, Voices of the Future project.
Bronwyn was lead author for two reports for UNEP's global survey of 18-35 year olds lifestyles and sustainability and a trustee for the UK Foundation for Democracy and Sustainability. Outside academia Bronwyn worked for children's media, serving as a Ministerial appointment to the NZ Broadcasting Standards Authority, and trustee for the SPARK Foundation. She was inaugural joint winner of UC Arts Conscience & Critic of Society Research Award 2014.

No surprises that people are not making much effort, when the government keeps giving mixed messages to do with climate change.

Complaining that fuel prices are too expensive. Even though high fuel prices will encourage lower fuel usage.

The PM flying to the other side of the world, just to make an announcement and talk to people. Ironically about helping the environment. Instead of appearing by video link and avoiding the carbon emissions from the plane trip.

Banning oil exploration, when that doesn't help reduce carbon emissions. Kills an income source that could have provided funding for reducing carbon emissions.

The above linked report says that tourism has a big environmental impact. Yet the government says that tourism can replace the jobs that will be lost due to the oil drilling ban.

That there are laws, which have the outcome that it is illegal to modify a car so it will use less fuel than what it would otherwise use.

Laws pertaining to electricity retail, which mean that for lots of people. Fossil fuel based heating and hot water are cheaper than 80% renewable electric heat and hot water.

Councils that charge consent fees just so you can insulate your house. And councils that leave land that is close to the city, zoned as rural. And only rezone further away land to urban. So the residents of that land have to drive further to get to work. Much more money has to be spent on roading upgrades. And far harder to provide proper public transport to those areas.

Could the Mods please move this thread to the Politics forum.

Just saying what?

You have quoted the qualifications of an Australian climate scientist whose entire life is wrapped up in climate change and intimately involved in the IPCC. And the NZ political scientist, also an IPCC contributor, with a deep interest in Climate Change.

As with Aredwood above, I again suggest the politics forum is the most appropriate place for this thread because it will inevitably deteriorate onto the same bile as most of the political threads.

Because first and foremost Geekzone is a site that is about all things technological. A place where people with similar interests can share and get help with stuff.
Rightly or wrongly, subjects like religion and politics bring out the worst in people, Mauricio recognised that when he hid the politics thread from the general stream. Climate Change has become highly politicised and almost to the point of religious fervour in some people. There is a whole internet out there for people who 'believe' or 'dont believe' in climate change that can find affirmation for their way of thinking.
I could probably cite half a dozen threads on GZ that deteriorate because of people's heartfelt but polarised opinions. Normally from the same contributors.

My 'beliefs' are none of your business but I drive a hybrid, my house is fully insulated, electrically heated, led lit and configured for maximum solar gain in the winter. I use public transport where it is convenient.

I wasn't questioning that. I was just curious where you stood.

Your point about the politicising of various topics is a valid one. Many discussions become point-scoring ego matches rather than serious debate. That seems to go with the times. I see climate change, whether discussed here or in the politics section, as a legitimate topic for a technology board like Geekzone. I do believe it is real, but I also know a lot of BS is flung about on both sides. A problem is it is difficult to quantify, and it is also hard for non-experts to know what is really going on. To a large extent, most of us just have to choose to agree with one 'expert' or another.

My own feeling is that something really is going on. The world seems to keep experiencing 100-year storms and that kind of thing. Stuff that was being predicted just a few years ago appears to be happening. But I am not a scientist and I don't know if things actually are changing, or if any change is due to human activity. I just read and watch the news and try to make my mind up from that. So far I think change is real, and we should probably try to do something to minimise the effects of it. Time will tell, I suppose.

Then re-read your opening post.
You link to a Radio NZ article, that in turn links to another RNZ article, that is based on yet another report of the latest IPCC report. The first article goes to two of the authors of the IPCC report and asks them what they think of it.

Kind of like asking Donald Trump who is the smartest guy in the room?
There's only ever going to be one answer. Even if he's in a room full of Mensa members.

To be truly informed sources need to be from other than lazy journalists that cut and paste and reference the opinion of other journalists.
