Hiya,
I've been doing uber techie things for 12 years now, and 10 years as a nerd kid before that, but I'm having trouble understanding why some people are so rabid about open sourcing software and hardware ?
I was reading the comments on Slashdot about iTunes replacements, and there are so many people saying how monopolistic it is of Apple to only allow Apple to provide software for the iPods etc ... So ?!!?  What exactly is the issue ?  Why do some people start demanding companies hand over their IP to the public ?
And it only seems to be certain companies they target .. the big ones like Apple, Microsoft, IBM etc ... I don't see many of them demanding that LG open up the SDK for their microwave or kettle ... surely that's the same thing ?  A consumer product you bought but are unable to service or upgrade yourself ?
Hmm .. seems like a rant now :-)  So what am I missing ?
Regards
Mark

Too under the weather to go into this, but open source is usually a good thing, though I too totally respect the rights of companies to stay closed source, protect their IP, and sell software for cold hard cash.

Heres an interesting perspective on Open Source issues. Some real gems in his postings.
