I don't know how prisoners even get into a position in the first place to take over a prison. Seems like poor control by the staff to me.

Anyway... if the prisoners have genuine grievances then they have my sympathy* but I'm not sure that rioting and burning down the prison is a constructive solution.

Prison management seems to be waiting the prisoners out at a cost of the prison being severely damaged. I don't know they don't send in their trained riot control people. They ought to be able to outnumber and outmatch the prisoners with 'less lethal' weapons such they they should be able to get this under control.

*another article suggested things like having toilet paper withheld is one of the grievances. That sort of thing shouldn't be withheld unless there is a genuine reason, eg prisoners doing things like blocking up toilets and causing other problems.

What should happen: Armed tactical units storm the wing and shoot anyone who resists. All survivors are outsourced to jails in Indonesia or somewhere similar.

What will happen: Negotiation, no charges against the rioters, yet more condition improvements (2 gaming consoles per prisoner instead of one!), and more wailing and gnashing of teeth from the Howard League, Greens and their ilk that we need to stop putting people in jail simply because they rape, rob and murder.

*edit*

It's already begun lol:

An anti-prison group has labelled the actions of rioters, who torched Waikeria Prison, as “commendable".

That's millions in damages!? How!?

I don't condone violence, but doing this to the prison..

And what are we going to do? Add another 5 years to be served concurrently with their current 20 year sentence (or whatever) so they'll likely get away with a slap on the wrist with a wet bus ticket and they know it.

I am pleased that New Zealands decision makers are far more sensible than the suggestions  being put forward in this thread

Something like this was only a matter of time. Corrections (a severe misnomer) have been critically under resourced for a long time, and the prisons have been overfull for just as long. Some people *might* face judicial sanctions through this, but it will be concurrent sentencing as cumulative costs money, and at the end of the day money (or the lack thereof) is what has brought this around.

Interestingly enough my Son is an officer out at Waikeria. (Just over 2 yrs.) I believe he is also involved in one of the Tactical squads that have been deployed.

I had lunch with him Xmas day and he told me he was not due back to work till wednesday but he was of course called in. He told me today he was there for 24 hrs.

Yes the Top jail was build in 1912 and not fit for purpose. it does definitely look munted from the look of the aerial reports. New reports state that it will not be inhabitable again by inmates.

New wing being built currently will be ready 2022 apparently.

The main concern from the inmates point of view appears to be lack of basic services/conditions-toilet paper etc.

What gets me is that reports indicate the prison management were caught off guard by this.

Currently the muster was around 750 inmates. The damage means a 1/3 of them will have to be moved elsewhere.

Offend against society then cost that society a pile of cash for years as part of your punishment. There’s a complete lack of logic in that as a concept.

I'm definitely not a hang 'em high type of person, but fine, they don't like the accommodation so they wreck it, they can get their relatives to send them some tents to live in for a couple of years.

What a revolting thread. Everyone calling for summary execution should be ashamed. I know this forum has always been full of hard-rightists, but I never thought I'd see you lot actively call for massacre of prisoners.

Place should have been torn down years ago, it's hideously undermaintained.

This prison had a surprise inspection in 2017:

https://inspectorate.corrections.govt.nz/reports/prison_inspection_reports/waikeria_prison_inspection_2017

The ombudsman's report can be downloaded here:

It's pretty awful.
