Second time that the MetService has ever issued a "Red Warning".

https://www.metservice.com/warnings/home

Heavy Rain Warning

AREA: CANTERBURY SOUTH OF ASHLEY

Starts: 3:00pm Sat 29 May

Ends: 11:00am Mon 31 May

Expect 200 to 300mm of rain to accumulate about the Canterbury High Country and foothills during this time, with 80 to 120mm of rain farther east about the Plains and coast. Peak hourly rates of 10 to 20mm/h are expected, especially from later Saturday and during Sunday. Also note, the freezing level is forecast to be around 1400 metres on Saturday, then lifting to around 1800 metres on Sunday, before lowering to 1400 metres again on Monday. Heavy Snow is expected above the freezing level throughout the event, but heavy snow may fall as low as 1000 metres in some places at times, especially on Saturday and on Monday.

This rain is expected to cause dangerous river conditions and significant flooding. Slips and floodwaters are likely to disrupt travel, making some roads impassable and possibly isolating communities.

Issued at: 11:23am Fri 28 May

Next update: 10:00pm Fri 28 May

Our Street floods with "normal" heavy rain.

They don't fix the problem, just do multiple sucker truck of water taken away every time for the last 5 years. (Repeat business this way for the contractor)

It used to be that way before the earthquake.

The earthquake team cleared the blockage, lasted several years, obviously the sump drainage is blocked again for the last 5+ years!

Probably be a fine weekend, as it is extremely rare here for the MetService to issue a warning BEFORE an event, and have it eventuate!

Warnings usually happen here as the event is actually happening!

Roll on the weekend - my gumboots are ready!

This is usually a better source than metservice (I say usually, as sometimes they are blatantly trying to get page hits with 'hour by hour updates').....but you cant blame em for trying to get some market share...

And it looks like you're linked page agrees with the met service this time.
Wonder if it will cut state highway one?

Different forecasters use the same raw data.

It looks like Chch is going to get dumped with ~ two months average rainfall over about 24 hours, strong easterlies and relatively high tides combined with that is probably going to cause some problems.  (This aside from the huge amount of rain that looks like will be dumped on river catchments).

Yeah, Aidanfield here. Looks like heavy rain starts at 11pm, but even then it will be 7 hours for one inch of rain. [yawn] :-)

Yea the Bishopdale residents Facebook page has been awash (!?!) with people commenting on all the in-depth preparations they have undertaken for this massive onslaught of rain.

Based on my observations so far, I am not sure I even needed to turn my wheelbarrow upside down, but that's me - a serial prepper 😂

Yeah - not more than 3-4mm / hour, but could ramp up from about 7am tomorrow, eases back in the afternoon.  But it's gonna really bucket down in the foothills.  That's what the "red alert" warning is for - not so much for Chch.

Burnside area of Chch. Just checked our rain gauge. 7.5mm so far and light rain at the moment. Gusty wind at times.

Not too unusual, yet.

I see Oxford has had about 75mm since midnight. Rangiora has had about 50mm. We've had under 15mm.

Yeah, but it's the Metservice issuing it... what do real weather services like WeatherWatch say?

[Pause]

Ah, they agree. So it's real then.

I think this needs to be made the universal measure of severe-enough weather: Do you need to turn your wheelbarrow upside down or not?
