Hey folks,

It is the right time of the year to go shopping for the latest gadgets, notebook PCs, mobile phones, etc.

Two questions:

1) Would you wait for the Boxing Day sales or buy before that?

2) What's on your own wish list?

For me, I am definitely waiting for the Boxing Day sales as most retailers offer 20% discounts off most - if not all - notebooks for example.

Looking to pick-up a Sony Vaio!

Would be interesting to know how much prices will go up, if they do, because of the fall in the dollar?
I'm not sure if 55c now vs 75c earlier in the year against the USD will mean prices of some imported electronics will go up 20% after xmas?

I don't think retailers ever passed on much savings from the high NZ dollar earlier this year.

Since we are in recession, retailers would prefer to turn their stock into cash.  I am expecting a big sale this year on Boxing Day!

An article in the weekend dominion today said there would be price rises in the electronic market early next year because of the low dollar. So boxing day could be a good time to purchase those good's you've been waiting for!

Typical.  Consumers hardly receive any decent prices when the dollar was high.  Now that the dollar has fallen, we are the ones paying higher prices.

Oh well, bring on Boxing Day!  I cannot wait:)

1) wait until the price temptation takes over. ie anytime.

2) $699 ps3 looks good. but really i'm using it for movies/bluray - so a decent bluray player that plays all sorts of other media under $350 would be grand! secondly a laptop for under 1g (well dell used to have basement 1.8G core 2 duo for $899 when the dollar was strong so kudos to that - it now costs $1200!)

Involuntary autocorrect in operation on mobile device. Apologies in advance.

You are right, the $699 deal on a 80GB PS3 looks great at the moment.  I wouldn't be surprised if the price went down even further on Boxing Day!

We're holding out until Boxing Day too for some stuff.

We got some deals on Boxing Day coupled with some talks with the manager on some 32" Bravias for around $1100/1200-ish (can't remember) when we said we were buying 2 (for a friend who was also there at the time).

Oh prices have dropped and hovered around the $1000 range now. But back then, it was pretty good.

I am looking to purchase a Sony Z series laptop - the top-end model over $4k.

Noel Leeming often has 20% off Sony laptops - at cost, if not below cost!  I look forward to another one this Boxing Day... fingers crossed!

Hmm only purchase I have been stalling on is some Bose Multimedia speakers, but I don't think they'll be discounted on boxing day, Bose products seem to have a RRP that every store sticks to. They're available from DSE, Noel leeming and Bond & Bond. Possible DSE will have 20% off storewide I guess.

I think Noel Leeming is the most generous retailer out there in terms of products which have a firm RRP.

For example, they discount their Vaios (no matter what model) once or twice a year at 20%.  Now that is unheard of anywhere... even in other countries!

So you may be surprised this year - Bose could be on the list.

Not any tech ones yet...

But if you're a tradesman, Mitre 10's got that credit thing: spend $100 = $10 "credit card" (their way of saying a gift voucher), $200 = $30, $250 = $50, where you can spend as much as you like and get up to a max of $400 of credit, and that's only on Boxing Day.

And with this, I have posted my 2000th post, and it'll be my last post of the year! Merry Christmas!
