Very sad news from Tonga but I was struck by one thing.

In the past, whenever some remote island lost communications with the rest of the world, the local ham radio community always seemed to be the one link that survived.

Not so this time.

Why?

Is this a local thing? No radio hams on Tonga?

Or is it a sign that the hobby is on the way out?
