who here thinks trademe is a little overpriced? i mean i see myself topping up every 2 items i list on trademe and the success fees of each item are around 3 bucks minimum each.. isnt it unfair to charge tax like a government on every single measly item thats listed. its as if they are laughing to the bank. of course we still use trademe because its the most used online trading site in the country, but i dont see why, sella is free, and its just as efficent to sell or buy there. trademe could make a hell of a lot of money from advertising alone, but instead they decide to rip off every single person by taxing them... please let me know if im wrong.

You can always use another website. I think it works wonders.

Sold my car for twice what I paid. Bought numerous items well below retail price. Even got to know some really nice sellers whom I buy from regularly.

Some people like it, some people don't. From my experience, TradeMe is one of the (if not THE) best auction sites in the world. Clean interface, simple to use.

But that's just my opinion, especially since I just got back home from picking up two Xeon 2.8Ghz servers for just $235. ;)

the fact that you bought items for well bellow retail price has nothing to do with the people at trademe, its between you and the seller.. im talking about unnecessary charges all the time. but wow two xeons for 325? that's pretty cheap :)
kinda sounds a little bit like this thread turned into an infomercial though :P

you know the pricing before you list a item and the fees don't complain after the fact

Sorry. I'm just very proud of finding this deal.

But the fees seem alright to me. They're not cheap, but considering how much I made on the website, I find them justifiable.

I may just be lucky and find always the good guys to deal with, though.

Those are not "unnecessary charges". That's how much they price their services. You know the prices before you sell, and you pay a % of the sell price so it's not like they are taking your money and running away - if you sell for more you make more, but pay more.

There are alternative sites as you say...

yea haha. alot of good bargains on trademe thats for sure, just think its a tad unnecessary to charge so much for every successful auction.. and i realized the prices before i signed up, but that doesnt mean i wont get frustrated about having to top up 100s of dollars every week just to sell items...

Just a little dumb founded at some of the replies, Trademe is not the same website it use to be.

Charging like a wounded bull for anything and everything, as for bargins there are a couple but most of the listings are over priced, a quick check on gearbot or if you really have to the new pricespy shows you can usually get the same item brand new for half the price.

Then you have the crafty sellers that sell you a computer for a good price thats usually well below every other listings but sting you with 3x what it should be for P&P.

Of course the sellers usually blame the prices on the fees being charged but if you check the same sellers are on the other sites listing the same item for the same price.

The most amusing thing I've seen of late is the so called $1 reserve auctions where you see people bid and win for a really great price then 2 minutes after the auction closes an offer is sent out to everyone that was watching for a higher price. ;)

Of course Trademe get away with the high fees because of the traffic that hits that site and only because they were the first site out of the starting blocks way back then so the first thing people think of is Trademe.

Ah well hopefully people will switch on and start moving to alternatives, long gone are the real bargins like from the T&E rag.

There's charging then theres overcharging for a service, sure they're entitled to charge but it gets to a point that it's just too extreme.

If this was say Telecom or Microsoft it would be considered the evil monopoly.

The whole double standard syndrome kicking in.

This isn't politically correct. It's reality. They are a company out there to make a profit. They charge how much they want - if people see value in that they pay. If they don't they can either a) complain or b) start using something else.

Just because someone doesn't agree with you it doesn't mean they are "defending everything".

@freitasm yea your right about the "a" option and thats what im doing "complain!!" if nobody complained about anything then this world would be pretty feeble minded and pathetic.. and what else do you call it besides defending it..why dont you just directly answer instead of being so ridiculously condescending to the extent where all you mutter is "thats what they charge" psshhh.

@generous777critic: I understand the point you make and it's one reason why I very rarely look at anything on their site and never consider them as a place for selling any of my stuff.

Having said that, did someone put a gun to your head and say you have to use them? Vote with your fingers and use another site...

Because complaining here is only good for you and won't affect Trade Me at all.

im not trying to "affect trademe" why is everyone so scared and wimpy that they cannot admit trademe is ridiculous. and this "a fool and their money are easily parted" quote?... lame. im not a fool because i actually acknowledge that you would have to be a fool to run your business with trademe.. anyways im finishing this thread, looks like no1 can agree with trademe overpricing here, cause they are either suckers or feel like a bigger person by saying "oh well change site" pathetic that everyone is so stuck in their ways and following the herd that they cant even admit NZs biggest trading site is a SCAM.

Feeble minded push overs..enjoy topping up your trademe suckers
