I'm looking at purchasing a couple of books from Amazon, and was wondering if anyone could give any feedback WRT their experiences with shipping estimates. The standard shipping rate has an estimate of 18- 32 days, and expediated shipping is estimated to be 8-16 business days. I'm interested in how accurate have these estimates generally been, and whether the goods been delivered at the lower or higher end of the estimates stated.

We usually order the slowest one and if the items are in stock get here in ten days max.

Wow, thats more than acceptable. The local supplier who I'm also considering have an estimate of 6-9 days :-)

As long as it is in stock.  I have been waiting on an order from Amazon CA since... September, still pending, every month or so they send me another message telling me it's been delayed.

Both books are listed as in stock. Was this the case for you, but it wasn't really in stock, or did you know it would be on backorder?

Using standard shipping? If so, then considering the feedback from Mauricio and yourself, I think I feel brave enough to take the plunge. :-)

Yes standard shipping - this was from the USA. But amazon UK have free shipping to NZ right now so might want to check them out.

I don't think it was listed as backorder at the time.  It was however much (MUCH) cheaper than anywhere else I could have bought it and I kind of suspected that something was likely amiss.

For those interested: http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/1859600069/ref=oss_product and it was CDN$ 25.38 when I "bought" it at Amazon.ca.

I don't think it is likely to ever become available, the last message from them at end of april has changed from "we want to let you know there is a delay" to "We're still trying to obtain the following item[s]"

Not sure whether to thank you or not :-)

I wandered over to amazon.co.uk, but with the exchange rate, even with free shipping the order is a little dearer than amazon.com using standard shipping (approx $4). But I DO like the look of the 8-12 business day delivery estimate. But but... if the US store will give me comparable delivery times anyway, I'm essentially paying $4 "estimation insurance" to use the UK site. :-D

Have you checked other sites for the book you want, bookdepository.com ships free.

abebooks.com can point you to cheap stuff if you don't mind 2nd hand.

Thanks for the heads up. I hadn't used bookdepository.com before, and ended up ordering with them. The cost was USD $54 which works out to be approximately NZD $10 cheaper than amazon.co.uk and NZD $6 cheaper than amazon.com, but with a 7-10 day delivery estimate.

Oh I was about to suggest Book Depository, I've used them a couple of times, sharp pricing, and delivery has been about a week. I hope you used the coupon code to get the 10% spring discount they're offering.

Heh. I guess condition no. 2 ("Discount codes can only be used at time of purchase and not retrospectively.") will mean I will not get a favourable response to the email I just sent them :-)
