This is a very interesting comparison from the Aust news site News.com.au. I'm posing this

Basically, they compare the relative benefits of renting a movie down the road or legally downloading it from either the Microsoft (x-box) or sony (PS3) services.

read the whole thing here:

http://www.news.com.au/technology/movie-rental-battle-blockbuster-store-v-the-internet/story-e6frfro0-1226079066676

I think the most interesting conclusion they draw is that the video store has the upper hand as the range is better.

Looking at their comparison I would say video store has the edge based on price.

Anyway, can anybody give a round up of the legal movie download options here in NZ? My understanding was that until recently it was iTunes or nothing.

My local store has $1 'older' movies for 8 days if you rent them from Monday to Thurs and $5 TV series on a Tuesday. As far as I know nothing comes anywhere near this on a price basis and that is without taking broadband caps into account. Having said that not much makes me angrier than a scratched disc that won't play or late fees or wanting to rent something that is out for that matter, I would pay a premium to avoid these things.

I have said if I had the money I would start a movie on demand service here in NZ and be the next Sam Morgan, ah but that is probably another thread.

Pleas note, I am not starting this thread to talk about how pirating. Yeah, I know downloading torrents is cheaper. If you want to talk about that check out the thread in ICT Regulation and Policy, I'm going wild there. You should too. Wink

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

Zune Marketplace, accessible through your PC or XBOX 360. The number of titles is not as large as the iTunes selection though.

Also Tivo has its own movie rental mechanism.

You can use netflix with a VPN, it is against the ToS but isn't illegal.

Regarding range - it won't take long before VOD service has a far far bigger range than video stores. It is only the case now because VOD services are quite new.

Also price will come down the more VOD services come into the market. Currently their is Itunes/Zune for one off rentals.

Netflix is cheap at US$10 a month but doesn't get new movies for a few months.

iTunes sometimes has cheap rental offers. Also worthwhile for one or two things difficult to find at the video store.

In general if you drive by the video store once a week already anyway the video store is a better deal. Except for new releases when you have to give back the next day - another stop to drop off.

I have looked at fatso nz now and again but they don't offer a subscription which suits my variable (3 this week, none the next week, {random}) viewing habits, and enough choice to keep me going.

The bandwidth capacity in NZ is generally so low I wonder if the carriers have any motivation at all to price service for providers for fear that it might take off. Even so, the bigger issue is probably the licensors attempting to guard their (allegedly) shrinking revenue stream like Gollum and his precious ring... What a train wreck.

Somewhere like S.Korea where they have massive bandwidth, what is the situation there? Are Korean movies released to net based on-demand rental immediately or very close to it? Anyone know? Does it work well for the studios?

I say support your video store those $1 bargains are great I usually get them every 2nd week & the odd new release. But I have seen a massive change over the years one time there when dial up was the fastest speed available our local video store was probably the busiest shop in town. Now with faster internet available (shouldn't have to mention why) & 4 owners later the video shop struggles to keep busy. What the owner needs to do to beat the downloading is put up a website so locals can order a video online and they deliver it to their door. Rent 3 videos get a free bag of popcorn! Add $3 for petrol charges I know I would order this way all the time.

I sometimes go to Civic Video down the road and rent a couple of $1 movies. However, I would love for Netflix to come to NZ. I always get envious when my American friends talk about it....

I'm 1000% for VOD. I love them as I am a little anti-social and hate going to the video store.
The guys is ugly and rude. The carpet stinks. Prices are not that great. But I still go there to get my Blu-Rays.

I rented many titles of ITunes and loved the experience. A pity new titles are not added as fast as the
video stores. But I keep checking and do not mind.

Tried Netflix but the good titles are not available as VOD, just the hard media, what doesn't work for us here down south. Prices are good though. There is a note saying they plan to expand worldwide, being Canada the first step.

I'm also with Fatso (again) and complement it with the stinky video store. Sent them an e-mail enquiring about the plans for a VOD and very coldly they replied that for the moment there is no demand for this kind of service in NZ.

So, we gotta stick with ITunes, some titles on Tivo and the who knows when ISky system. The other service I don't know coz I don't have those machines at home.

Wow. Just shows how out of touch organizations really are.
I think the solution there would be if everyone emailed Fatso enquiring about possible VOD services.
Do you think they would take notice then.... ?

I'm personally after the best video and sound possible so if it's a movie i really want to see I'd go the bluray disc every time.

My local video store is $1 for a week for anything not new release and $4 for new release. These prices are always, not certain days of the week and are the same for DVD or Bluray.

I don't have a bluray player and don't want to buy in to the format. I think physical discs are a relic of the past, we no longer require them so why use them?

I would much rather pay to stream an HD movie but as it stands in NZ there aren't any services where I can easily stream HD content.

Perhaps the answer the should have given was the level of demand is not there to satisfy the cost invloved. I could see this as quite a justifiable answer.

If you don't mind old movies or ones that did not do well at the box office plus movies only in SD with stereo sound..   You can bet better and later ones at your local videoez.

I hear where you are coming from and agree that's where we are going, but I don't think we are there yet.
Bluray file size for a movie is often in the 30Gb region.  If you are going to stream this then obviously something (quality) has got to give.  Bluray offers uncompressed HD audio and video quality which personally I'm not about to give up.

+1 The lack and variable quality of VOD has left me cold to this point, the small cost of a BD player to get premium pics and sounds is a must for me.

Any what a cost it is, A copy protection scheme that the studio's would accept is upwards of $750k NZ + any inevitable modifications needed would require auditing on the system.

Most problems are the result of previous solutions...
