Hi.

ihug's network status page says users might have trouble connecting, and get slow speeds once connected. I've been having problems for a week or two, the message has been up for at least a few days.

Have any other ihug user's experienced these problems? And, of more interest, are any customers of other ISPs having similar problems?

ihug has said that they think it is a Telecom problem, but I don't see any mention of issues on other ISPs network status pages which I would have expected.

My original problem was lots of errors on the dsl line... header error check failures, crc failures, successful RS corrections, and failed RS correction attempts. The noise margin was highly variable so I figure there was intermittent interference.

Consequently I was getting 80KiB/s on average, if I was lucky, and lots of hung connections.

Ultimately a dsl tech came and checked the house, no problems. Then gave me a new port at the exchange, a bigger better faster one. That seems to have reduced the errors a great deal, but I still get some. I've even bought a new modem in case that was a problem, a Dynalink ADSL2+, it connects faster than my old Nokia M1122 but still gets errors.

On the new port I'm getting 120KiB/s on average, but I don't know whether that's more line trouble or a problem with ihug, or in the bowels of Telecom.

At the moment I'm getting about 1 error/second that the RS can deal with, but often it's far far worse with lots of uncorrectable errors. Anybody have an idea what 'acceptable' error rates are? Any advice on what I can check?

I've got a good strong connection it seems:
Statistics Downstream Upstream
Line Rate 5632 Kbps 160 Kbps
Attainable Line Rate 6144 Kbps 1084 Kbps
Noise Margin 12.4 dB 24.0 dB
Line Attenuation 43.0 dB 25.0 dB
Output Power 19.8 dBm 0.2 dBm

Thanks
Bob

No problems at all with XNet.  My download speed never drops below 3.5Mbps (450kBps), and often it is around 6.5Mbps.  I spend a lot of time on the Internet, and never have any problems.  Not even at peak time.

You can never have enough Volvos!

I'm with Xtra, and after years of slow connection speeds am resigned to the fact that I have a slow connection.

It could be because of a number of factors, but the main one (in my opinion) is that the take up in my area is quite high.  I base this on the number of wireless routers I can see from my office, and the way my neighbour talks about his son downloading overnight.

When I talk to Telecom about it, they just give me a form to fill out noting speeds at certain times of the day and week.  I've already got this covered with the speed test on NZDSL.co.nz.  Doesn't help the speed side though.

I'm averaging about 1Mbps with peaks of 3.5Mbps.  Sooooo frustrating.  B

My newly connected DSL with (Telstra) Clear is very consitent, even at peak times.

National traffic is 6Mbps down , 650 up
Just did a test now 6199 down, 747 up.
international traffic is at least 600Kbps down in the busiest peak times but very consitent.
International just now when it's quiet, 937 down, 630 up (To the USA LA)
much better to Aust as you can imagine

iHug which I was stuck with in the last place was hideosly unreliable, always having outages, always having excuses.

iSlug they were known as.

No issues here - on a Xtra connection and Slingshot connection.

For the last week or so I have been getting atrocious speed with Xnet. I am on the fullspeed Flood plan and my download test speed barely reaches 700kbps at NZDSL.co.nz. I rang Xnet and they tell me I am syncing at 7.5mbps and requested I send them some speed test and trace route data which I have provided. They will send this to Telecom for analysis and get back to me. When I was with Xtra I would get the odd day with poor speed but it was never as prolonged as this.

I'm connected to the St. Heliers Road/Kohimarama Road (Auckland) exchange apparently. The sort of area I'd expect high broadband penetration... haven't had noticeable contention problems previously, a bit of slow down on school holidays.

I suppose my new port might be on a link with more contention, so maybe I've jumped out of the frying pan onto a hot griddle.

Sounds like BugMeNot and Reon might be having the same sort of problem as me. I've had a cron job running to test connection speeds, which I sent to help@ihug.co.nz last night but I have a sneaking suspicion that their automated responder just ate it. I'll try again I guess.

From my speed tests I've noticed that often it will take a long time (3+ seconds) to establish a connection but subsequent transfer is reasonably fast. Also ihugs speedtest page only downloads 512KiB which is too small for a good test, pulling a 10MiB file off their debian server shows that the transfer often starts out reasonable but slows/hangs.

I've had one or two tests on the small file giving me 410KiB/s but the 10MiB file speeds are all about 110KiB/s.

Does anyone, good connection or bad, have error stats on their modem? I'm interested to know if mine are unusual.

From my Dynalink, the 'Status'->'ADSL Line' page:
Super Frames 425801 425799
Super Frame Errors 0 0
RS Words 28954534 3619291
RS Correctable Errors 2592 0
RS Uncorrectable Errors 0 0
HEC Errors 0 0
OCD Errors 0 0
LCD Errors 0 0
Total Cells 87410328 0
Data Cells 1664874 0
Bit Errors 0 0
Total ES 0 0
Total SES 0 0
Total UAS 10 0

That's after about 2 hours connected and 80MB downloaded. Pretty good this morning, usually lots of uncorrectable errors.

In the Nokia M1122 you can get similar info from the 'Statistics'->'DSL' page. Dunno about other modems.

Thanks for the help.

Dlinks tend to reboot if S/N ratio marginal. Please post vital statistics, downstream attenuation etc. Do you have a master splitter installed (dedicated ADSL outlet).

That seems to be the standard answer from many ISPs (there are a few exceptions) these days; they just want to pass the buck... Having trouble connecting or authenticating is unlikely to be a Telecom problem, but something wrong with ihug’s systems / equipment.

Using Xtra here and have no trouble at all.

How did you know i have a Dlink router?

Right, we have two ports phone wise, one for the phones and one for the net. I got no idea how to tell you the rest. My laptop just uses windows to connect it to the wireless but im very sure its not the wireless thats doing it.

I read previous posts. Use a web browser (enter ip address) to connect to the router and go to status tab. Router's ip address (the gateway) can be found from running "ipconfig /all" at shell prompt.

If we're talking about getting into the admin for your router, try typing the following into a browser address bar:

192.168.0.1 OR 10.0.0.1

Either of these should also be visible if you follow Ross' instructions and type ipconfig /all in a DOS prompt:

e.g.
...
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

If you get this far, and a prompt for username and password comes up, try admin:password
