After modifying my network and reducing my incoming VDSL line length by 80 meters back in June-2015, DLM kindly bumped me up to the 17a profile with a nice rock solid 57/10 Mbps connection.

This 17a connection performed without any issues or logged errors from 18-June-15 through to 4-August-15 with no interruptions.

Around 1.00am on the 4th of August, there was an outage probably caused by Spark/Chorus maintenance. My Draytek 130 modem automatically reconnected to VDSL with a very good sync of 64/10 Mbps but there was no internet access between 1am and 7am.

I dutifully rebooted both modem and router. The modem reconnected to VDSL on the 17a profile with a good 58/10 Mbps sync but still no internet access so I had to call Spark broadband support.

The operator either reset or refreshed my port and my modem dropped back to the 8b profile with only a 45/10 connection!

I have now been waiting patiently for 3 weeks for DLM to put me back on the 17a profile but this has not happened.

I rebooted my modem last week at 4am and the connection improved to 49/10 Mbps but still stuck on the 8B profile.

These are the current details....

I have a proven record that my line qualifies for 17a but my attainable VDSL speed has been penalised by an issue probably caused by Spark or Chorus maintenance three weeks ago that has forced my connection back onto the lower 8B profile because of a forced port reset/refresh and DLM does not appear to be active.

Is there anyone that I can contact that has the skills or access to give DLM a nudge or look at my profile ?

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

DLM profiles can't be set. DLM decides what is best for your connection based on the many variables it collects.

There could be many reasons why your speed has reduced, especially due to FEXT.

Unfortunately I think it's highly unlikely anyone will be able to help you, given that your sync is still very good and DSL is a best effort service. I believe DLM is highly automated, and I don't think your ISP has any ability (other than the port refreshes perhaps?) to influence DLM.  And I don't believe Chorus will do anything either as your line performance seems well within acceptable specs.

I think it's just a case of hurry up and wait.

EDIT: Also keep in mind that the change to the 998 bandplan will likely roll out more widely some time soon (I think) so even if someone could manually update your profile, things would likely change again when that happens...

Yep, and that aspect is the most disappointing thing about VDSL.

In this particular case, I have previously had a VERY stable 17a connection with absolutely no issues and have lost that due the failure of my broadband providers to provide the so called 'best effort service'.

In fact, someone fumbled my connection at 1am on Aug 4th which has resulted in me getting a 'bad effort service' :)

I can assure you many people would be very, very happy with a 49/10 on VDSL...

What exactly are you doing with your connection that 49/10 is so terrible?

Oh hell yeah, I do realise that I have 'lucked out' and currently enjoy excellent VDSL speeds that some people would sell an appendage to get but now that I know I could get back to 64 Mbps down....

Well, I just want my toys back :)

you dont have a bad effort service. you need to hop out of dream land.

i had 8b for 3 months when i first got VDSL, then i went to 17a for almost a year, then had a fault on the line and went back down to 8b, about 3 months back i was back up to 17a.

I too also have a very stable line but its just the nature of VDSL.

Just be thankful you can get VDSL and are not on a conklin

As explained above there are many reasons why this could have occured. Assuming FEXT is playing it's part in this (which it could easily be), you wouldn't necessarily get your old speed back even if your profile was changed back to 17a.

If you haven't done so already, Buy a UPS. Use it to supply your VDSL modem. Next time there is a power cut in your area. Resync the modem before the power comes back on. Unlikely to be many other people with backup power. So no crosstalk from other lines - You should get much better sync rates.
